Key Responsibilities:

  1. Fiber Splicing:

    • Perform fiber splicing operations including both fusion and mechanical splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fibers.
    • Read, create and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams.
    • Maintain and handle optical fibers in a manner that prevents degradation.
  2. Testing and Troubleshooting:

    • Conduct thorough testing of newly installed or repaired fiber optic links using OTDRs, power meters, and other related equipment to ensure the integrity of the fiber.
    • Identify and resolve optical fiber issues such as breaks, signal leakage, and other losses.
    • Troubleshoot and rectify fiber optic problems in coordination with the network operations center and other field technicians.
  3. Installation and Maintenance:

    • Install and dress fiber optic cables in various environments, including underground conduits, aerial installations, and within buildings.
    • Perform mid-sheath entries and complete end terminations including polishing and connector attachment according to industry standards.
    • Maintain and repair existing fiber optic infrastructure to ensure optimal network performance.
  4. Documentation:

    • Update and maintain clear and accurate documentation of all completed splicing work, test results, and site analysis.
    • Document technical problems, resolutions, and processes for future reference.
  5. Safety and Compliance:

    • Adhere to company policies and industry standard safety practices.
    • Ensure all work complies with state and federal regulations, codes, and specifications.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree a plus.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in fiber optic splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with industry tools and technology, including fusion splicer, OTDR, and optical power meters.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in various environments and physical conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Skills:

  • Certification from a fiber optic training course.
  • Experience with aerial fiber installations and pole climbing.
  • Familiarity with telecommunications construction practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders or poles as needed.
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions and at various heights.
