POSITION SUMMARY

Assists in the planning, implementation and evaluation of recreational social, intellectual emotional and spiritual programs in accordance with the resident’s assessment and care plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Demonstrates commitment to company’s mission, values and standards of ethical behavior.
  2. Models a positive and professional image that emulates the organization's mission and encourages a spirit of cooperation with co-workers. Provides assistance to co-workers and promotes teamwork by sharing information useful to achieving desired results.
  3. Ensures that all residents are treated fairly, with kindness, dignity, and respect, and their rights are protected at all times.
  4. Respects and upholds all residents’ personal and property rights whenever carrying out duties, including knocking before entering a resident's room.
  5. Complies with all company and departmental policies and procedures.
  6. Assists and/or conducts assigned group or one-to-one activity programs according to calendar.
  7. Moves and arranges equipment/supplies to assure that activity areas are ready for scheduled activity.
  8. Assists residents move to and from activity programs as needed.
  9. Is responsible for returning all activity department materials to their proper place in a timely manner and maintaining a tidy, pleasant atmosphere in activity room.
  10. Assists Activity Director in developing schedule for activities, distributes monthly activity calendars to residents and posts changes to calendar according to state and federal regulations.
  11. Follows resident care plan in providing daily activities for residents.
  12. Assists in documentation duties as required and in accordance with Company policies and procedures and government regulations. Ensures documentation is accurate, informative and descriptive of the resident's condition, care provided and resident's response to care.
  13. Observes residents’ mood, behavior, degree of involvement and response to activity and alerts supervisor or clinical staff as needed.
  14. Assists residents who are confined to bed by visiting with them, writing letters, running errands, making appointments, etc., as necessary.
  15. Makes recommendations to Activity Director for new activity programs.
  16. May participate in meetings with resident/family.
  17. May substitute for Activity Director when state and federal requirements are met.
  18. Provides adapted material for impaired residents to ensure maximum participation in activities. Alerts Activity Director to need for additional adaptive devices to enhance participation.
  19. Assists in providing library service for residents in cooperation with local library.
  20. Schedules movies, plans parties and provides games for residents.
  21. Encourages hobbies and provides materials in keeping with resident’s financial status and department budget.
  22. Encourages residents to participate in religious activities through religious services, reading material, visits with chaplains, etc., to fulfill their basic religious needs.
  23. Assists in arranging transportation for field trips and to other facilities when necessary; may drive residents to outings as needed
  24. May participate in discharge planning.
  25. May arrange for exhibit or sale of articles made by residents i.e., at bazaars, in gift shop
  26. Reports the following in accordance with established facility procedures and regulatory standards: accidents and incidents; resident grievances, complaints, allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property; occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals; concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance including but not limited to hazardous conditions and equipment.
  27. Adheres to state and federal regulations and company policies and procedures; HIPAA confidentiality standards of resident and facility information; Infection Control, Universal Precautions, OSHA and safety standards; and established safety precautions and regulations (including use of mechanical lifts when lifting or moving heavy individuals or objects) in the performance of tasks and the use of equipment and supplies.
  28. Maintains safe and clean work area.
  29. Attends orientation, in services and meetings as required. Participates in OSHA and CDC in-service training programs for hazardous communication, TB management, and bloodborne pathogens standard.
  30. Takes responsibility for staying updated on new regulations, best practices and internal policies and procedures.
  31. Demonstrates knowledge of facility and departmental quality improvement activities. Recommends to Supervisor any equipment and supplies needed for the department as well as any departmental improvements.
  32. Utilizes most efficient, safe and cost effective techniques and methods, and uses supplies and equipment in most efficient manner to minimize waste.
  33. Participates in and assists in departmental studies and projects as required.
  34. May perform administrative duties such as completing forms, reports, etc., and submit to Supervisor as necessary.
  35. Works with facility consultants as necessary and implements recommendations as required.
  36. Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. 1-2 years’ experience in related position, in healthcare environment preferred
  2. Aptitude for and/or some training in arts and crafts required
  3. High school diploma or equivalent desirable

  9. Willingness and ability to function as an effective team member through good communication and cooperation to meet departmental goals
  10. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to change
  11. Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
  12. Ability to maintain confidentiality and be discreet
  13. Must be able to multi-task and handle pressure
  14. Must be able to follow instructions and to accept feedback
  15. Must successfully pass background check, health exams, and any other pre-employment requirements
  16. Must be able to operate departmental equipment, as appropriate
  17. Willing to work beyond normal working hours, weekends, holidays, and/or on other shifts and in other positions, when necessary
  18. Must be able to read, write and speak the English language sufficiently and comprehensibly enough to perform the essential functions of the job
  19. Strong communication skills, both one-on-one and in a group, and ability to listen and respond to questions effectively.
