Scientific Project and Alliance Manager – Scientific Operations

The mission of the Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics (AIND) is to answer fundamental questions about brain function. Specifically, how does our brain build our understanding of the complex world around us to guide the flexible behaviors that address our biological needs? The answers will be in terms of defined neuron types interacting across the whole brain and body, requiring us to develop next-generation neurotechnologies and employ a team-based approach for discovery neuroscience. Knowledge, data, and tools will be widely shared, in part to support the development of therapies for brain disorders.

The Allen institute for Neural Dynamics is seeking a Scientific Project and Alliance Manager. We are looking for a team player and a natural leader with strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; someone who can navigate challenging group dynamics and work effectively across scientific, technical, and business interfaces. This individual will support ground-breaking projects, in collaboration with the Allen Institute for Brain Science and partners across the world. The Scientific Project and Alliance Manager will provide the operational structure necessary for a multi-disciplinary, international team to drive discoveries based on mapping brain-wide neural circuits using cutting-edge optical imaging and neurophysiology.

Essential Functions

  • Drive, coordinate, and support the scientific and educational goals of AIND projects
  • Create, maintain, and disseminate project deliverables and timelines, using project management best practices and tools
  • In partnership with scientific co-leads for projects, ensure the successful execution of project deliverables by supporting our cross-functional teams through planning and execution phases
  • Provide an efficient and flexible collaborative environment to manage internal and external project team communication and collaboration
  • Work with stakeholders to coordinate budget planning, forecasting, and monitoring
  • Partner with scientific staff to assist with development of competitive applications for external funding. Ensure that Grants Management best practices are followed
  • Facilitate efficient communication between scientific and administrative groups

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 1 - 2 years of project management experience in a scientific or technical environment

Preferred Education and Experience

  • PhD degree
  • 5 years of experience in project management, beyond an academic laboratory/postdoctoral setting
  • Formal project management training and/or PMP certification
  • Experience with competitive external funding applications (federal and private) including familiarity with the budget process and relevant compliance and post-award reporting requirements
  • Working knowledge in neuroscience, in vivo neurophysiology, databases, Python programming

Physical Demands

  • Fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment; repetitive motion with lab equipment

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This role is currently working onsite and is expected to work onsite for the majority of working hours. The primary work location for this role is Allen Institute campus, with flexibility to work remotely on a limited basis. We are a Washington State employer; any remote work must be performed in Washington State.

Travel

  • Attendance and participation in national and/or international conferences may be required

Annualized Salary Range

  • $108,350 - $151,650 *
  • Final salary depends on required education for the role, experience, and level of skills relevant to the role, along with work location, where applicable.
