Overview

Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-orientedSenior Medical Officer to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Office of the Director (OD), Office of the Chief of Staff for the Immediate Office of the Director (IOD)Office of Science Management and Operations (OSMO). 

Technical Requirements: 

  • Provide clinical oversight support in relation to patient care and clinical operations to NIH-supported clinical studies in the MENAT region.
  • Evaluate exisiting or proposed clinical research in the MENAT region.
  • Evaluate protocols and provide suggestions for design, execution and improvement.
  • Provide clinical guidance to staff on various clinical processes and operational issues.
  • Provide advice and oversight for relevant NIH clinical trials in the region.
  • As needed, review safety reports and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Advise on policies and guidelines for NIAID clinical research in the MENAT region.
  • Coordinate and participate in various meetings, training and safety-related educational programs in the MENAT region.
  • Identify junior clinical researchers in the MENAT region and evaluates their research and research capacity.
  • Provide clinical research training to junior investigators in the MENAT region.
  • Identify leading biomedical research institutions in the MENAT region and initiate contacts that can lead to collaborative partnerships with NIH.
  • Provide scientific and regional expertise to foster the development of U.S. and MENAT clinical and biomedical research collaborations.
  • Participate in planning meetings, via conference call or in person, to further U.S.-MENAT clinical research collaborations that take into account the current vision, mission, ongoing research activities, and the Institute’s strategic priorities / initiatives.
  • Monitor ongoing internal and external factors that may influence or impact U.S.-MENAT clinical research collaborations and make recommendations to NIAID leadership regarding the same.
  • Constitute and coordinate a working group (Regional Advisory Panel, RAP) to guide and, if requested, to create a strategic plan or roadmap for biomedical research-focused interactions involving U.S. and MENAT scientists.
  • Identify pertinent literature, resources and other documents to support the planning and evaluation process.
  • Coordinate and develop scientific forums, workshops and conferences in the MENAT region focused on high-priority infectious diseases and immunology programs.
  • Identify MENAT scientists in relevant areas and disciplines to present at scientific workshops and potentially engage in collaborative research.
  • Identify and interface with appropriate local co-hosts to help plan and finance scientific workshops.
  • Identify opportunities for, plan and help host research-oriented site visits.
  • Provide scientific and clinical leadership and coordination in the development of a US-MENAT-focused competitive collaborative award programs.
  • Provide expert assistance in processes used to review clinical and biomedical research proposals, abstracts and other materials for merit and scientific value.
  • Write and review technical protocols and reports regarding NIH clinical research in the MENAT region. When required, publish relevant clinical research findings and present clinical reseach findings at appropriate international venues. Develop papers for publication regarding the content of scientific workshops and NIAID activities in the MENAT region.
  • Meet monthly with NIAID Principal Deputy Director to update on project status.

Specific Qualifications:

  • Medical degree is required. 
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant global immunology and/or infectious disease research, training and clinical experience. 
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of clinical/academic medicine experience working in the MENAT Region. 
  • Expertise in bringing together basic, clinical and public health research scientists and leaders in the MENAT region. 
  • Fluent in English and Arabic with an ability to translate written and oral communications. 
  • Provide medical, clinical and scientific advice from the inception of a concept note to protocol development, conduct, analysis and publication. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-level vision and linkages to leading academic and research institutions to support the development of a program of expanded biomedical and clinical research in the MENAT region. 
  • Serve as the liaison with highest-level partners such as Ministers of Health (MOH) and other governmental and foundation leadership in countries where clinical studies and biomedical research are being or may be conducted. 
  • Demonstrated research excellence through achievement of NIH clinical research grant awards, publication record, and/or other relevant achievements. 
  • Experience with BOX, Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, software products required. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills required. 
  • Familiarity with NIH and biomedical research supported by the U.S. Government is highly desirable.
