Campaign Organizer

The San Francisco Labor Council is metropolitan labor body in Northern California. We represent over 100,000 union members and their families who live and/or work in San Francisco. The Campaign Organizer is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of assigned electoral, legislative, issue and related campaigns, as well as comprehensive campaigns in support of union organizing and collective bargaining. The Campaign Organizer will help build community support and partnerships, coordinate retiree activism, community services and outreach on behalf of our 100,000 members.

The Council is currently accepting resumes for the full-timeposition of Campaign Organizer. The Campaign Organizer works under the direction of the Executive Director to implement the Council’s campaigns and programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

· Work with Labor Council leadership to determine campaign goals;

· Work with unions along with progressive and political allies and community groups to develop shared goals and strategy around campaigns that benefit working men and women and the Labor Council;

  • Help develop and implement intensive political field operations, including worksite and precinct organizing and training, phone banking, mail targeting, voter registration and all other related Get Out The Vote activities.
  • Utilize advanced data management tools and techniques to conduct voter targeting and analysis for issue and electoral campaigns. Manipulate voter, membership, volunteer and other databases. Provide data and technological guidance on issue and electoral campaigns. Administer, support, and train users on voter file system, e.g. Labor Activist Network (LAN). Generate targeted voter/member lists for paid and volunteer contact programs including mail, canvassing, online, and phone.
  • Oversee the Council’s annual political campaign calendar, candidate recruitment, and endorsement process.
  • Participate in the strategy-setting, promotion, and implementation of policies of the Council, including political and legislative campaigns, public affairs events, organizing programs, educational activities, picket lines, rallies, or other projects which strengthen the Council and its affiliate unions.
  • Implement the PAC/COPE budget, monitor FPPC reporting and laws as well as rules of the San Francisco Ethics Commission.
  • Represent the Labor Council in the community and city government as called upon.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years prior experience working with labor unions (and/or community organizations), with direct political and organizing campaign experience, preferably in a leadership role, which include significant knowledge of worker-related issues and conduct.
  • Competent writing skills & the ability to verbally communicate in a clear, enthusiastic, and respectful manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively under strict timelines.
  • Ability to work well with various constituencies – from rank-and-file union members to union leaders, from elected officials to political candidates to community members at large.
  • Well organized and multitask oriented.
  • Preferred experience reading and using qualitative and quantitative research (e.g. polling and focus groups) as well as micro targeting/modeling to inform campaign strategy.
  • Willingness to sign and honor an agreement protecting the integrity of union and partner data.
  • Experience working in politically sensitive situations with diplomacy.
  • Working knowledge of collective bargaining campaigns and union representation campaigns preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Computer familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access; PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign a plus. Ability to produce mobilization fliers and newsletters; internet, social media, and general communications skills essential.

This job often requires long hours and weekend work. Applicants need to be aware of the demands of the job as well as the many fulfilling rewards it offers. The salary package for the Political Director is competitive, based on experience, with full health care and pension benefits.
