General Purpose

The Apprentice Lineworker position consists of a five year on-the-job progressive training program administered by the Village of Winnetka. Apprentice Lineworkers will predominately focus on the development of skills associated with underground electric systems. Apprentices must complete a rigorous training program that includes, but is not limited to, on-the-job technical training, coursework, and some travel for field training. Apprentice Lineworkers will be trained in various electrical systems: Underground Residential Distribution (URD), conventional underground, and overhead. This position will assist other employees in the installation, expansion, relocation, repair, and maintenance of utility facilities and service to residents. In addition to normal linework, apprentice lineworkers will also support the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Village's water distribution system as needed.
Essential Functions:
  • Learns the work and safety procedures of a lineworker.
  • Provides assistance to other employees, as directed, to learn necessary skills.
  • Assist in the construction of new underground services.
  • Assist lineman in the replacement and installation of underground circuits.
  • Assist lineman in restoring underground and overhead outages.
  • Assist lineman in maintaining existing overhead and underground equipment and circuits.
  • Attend to portable equipment such as manhole ventilators, generators, pumps, and compressors.
  • Clean and maintain equipment.
  • Learn to safely operate bucket trucks, line trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, skid steer loaders, forklifts, pavement cutters, air compressors, and jack hammers.
  • Performs tasks such as placing and removing barricades; installing and assembling scaffolding; laying brick; forming, mixing, and pouring concrete; cutting; trimming trees; painting; installing shoring; and placing pipe, conduit, and manholes as directed.
  • Installs electric and water meters and wiring remote touchpads.
  • Perform underground locates for water and electric facilities.
  • Complete related study units and construction labs as specified in the apprentice curriculum.
  • Perform periodic on-call duty assignment for after hour emergency response.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of 1-2 years experience with a line crew in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution systems preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A" with an air break endorsement
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the use of hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
  • Ability to read, clearly speak, and legibly write the English language.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity, pole line materials, and Underground Residential Distribution (URD) equipment desired.
Other Requirements

Shifts are typically 8 hours in duration (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.), 40 hours weekly, but may be extended or altered in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, workload, and/or work in progress. Position has "on-call" responsibilities and may be required to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and/or holidays on short notice. Work is sometimes required under adverse or unusual conditions such as, but not limited to, cold, hot, wet, dark, dusty, noisy and cramped surroundings, in all weather conditions, and at all hours of the day. Must perform duties independently or as a crew member. To reach lineman status, apprentices must be able to climb poles up to 70 feet high.
The position requires the ability to use and operate motorized vehicles and equipment, common hand and power tools, mobile radios and telephones; lift and/or move up to 100 pounds; effective audio-visual discrimination and perception; color vision adequate to identify red, yellow and green; and hearing sufficient to understand verbal direction and to detect abnormal equipment operation and alarms.
Village of Winnetka

The Village of Winnetka is an established North Shore suburban community, located approximately 20 miles north of Chicago. Its Water & Electric Department, with 30 employees, is responsible for the water and electric plants (located on Tower Road adjacent to Lake Michigan) as well as both distribution systems. The peak electrical demand for the Village is 40 MW. This department works closely with a separate Public Works Department that provides other public services.
Starting Compensation: $92,681/yr.
Position Range: $92,681 - $123,337

No relocation expenses are provided for this position. Due to the "on-call" nature of the position, successful candidate will be expected to reside within 60 minutes in proximity to the Village of Winnetka within 90 days of employment.
