Platinum Group Metal Services (PGMS) is a leading refiner and recycler of precious group metals. The growing demand for low carbon and responsibly sourced products is creating growth opportunities in critical metals recycling and secondary refining, and as the world's largest precious metals recycler, PGMS is a key player in the circular economy.
The incumbent directly supervises all aspects of daily production, on an assigned shift, in one of the following production areas: Chemicals, Catalysts, Refinery, or Material Preparation.
The Production Supervisor reports to the Production Superintendent in a production area and directly supervises production operators on an assigned shift. The production supervisor confers daily with the Superintendent regarding overall production plans and schedules, problem areas, and the exchange of information between shifts.
Because the incumbent directly supervises hourly union production and maintenance employees, they must be familiar with the provisions of the current union contract. In addition, the incumbent may interact with other production areas, as well as the maintenance, purchasing and HR departments. The incumbent must display a professional and positive attitude during dealings with employees, customers, and vendors.
The incumbent may work with hazardous wastes and substances, including chlorine and acids. Because of the hazardous nature of some materials, and the value of precious metals used in the production areas, the production supervisor must adhere to safety and security procedures and maintain thorough production records and support documentation as required.
Employees are trained in Discharge Prevention Containment and Countermeasures (DPCC) regulations and are responsible for proper identification and notification of spills and leaks of hazardous substances. Employees assigned to work with Extraordinarily Hazardous Substances (EHS) or processes, as defined within the scope of the New Jersey State Toxic Catastrophic Prevention act (TCPA), must be fully trained and qualified in accordance with State mandated regulations and company requirements. Additionally, employees assigned to work with hazardous wastes are trained and qualified in proper management practices for hazardous wastes that they handle, per the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Your responsibilities:
  • Effectively utilize manpower, materials and equipment to produce quality products and/or services at the optimum level of productivity to maximize business unit profitability.
  • The incumbent schedules jobs, people, materials and equipment, for assigned shifts, to ensure that production campaigns are completed on time and according to customer specifications.
  • The incumbent must work within manufacturing and payroll budgets. The incumbent may be required to take part in semi-annual and/or annual inventories.
  • Maintain effective cost control through the economical use of chemicals and raw materials, overtime assignments, and labor allocations to complete production campaigns, according to customer specifications.
  • Maintain and control security of customer and departmental metal, providing an accurate accounting of precious metals and witness materials through a system of checks and documentation to ensure the integrity of production processes.
  • Responsible for supervising the daily activities of union production operators, scheduling equipment maintenance as required, monitoring production processes to ensure the cost effective and timely delivery of services or products to meet customer specifications.
  • Maintain existing equipment, reporting any difficulties and ensuring proper repairs are completed expediently; recommend replacement or additional equipment to increase production and/or improve cost effectiveness as required.
  • Administer company policies and procedures to ensure that operations meet all federal, state and company safety, health and environmental regulations.
  • Responsible for possessing an understanding of PGM chemistry and sound judgment, particularly when new products and/or processes are introduced.
  • The incumbent is required to operate within safety, health and environmental parameters not only for the protection of employees, but also to eliminate the risk of complaints and violations.
  • Promote a positive work environment by maintaining a safe work area, monitoring the union contract and consistently enforcing company rules and provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Promote a professional and positive attitude through contact with customers and/or representatives.
  • Maintain quality assurance and strict process procedures to assure customer commitment and on time delivery.
  • Assist in training newly hired chemical operators.
  • Responsible for performing some of the Superintendent's duties during their absence.
  • May perform other duties as required.
Requirements for the role:
  • Associates Degree or Vocational Degree or closely related discipline with a knowledge of the principles of manufacturing chemical engineering.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience in a mechanical industrial or trade environment
