As an entry level recruit/officer with the Wheat Ridge Police Department, we will pay to have you attend the best police recruit academy in the state of Colorado. The academy's training covers a wide range of topics and skills necessary to become a successful law enforcement officer which include learning: the law and criminal procedures; communication and de-escalation skills; patrol tactics and crime scene investigation skills; community policing and problem solving; traffic investigations and use of force tactics as well as skills such as firearms, arrest control and driving. As a patrol officer you will handle incidents involving crime, traffic and quality of life issues helping to make Wheat Ridge a safe community in which to live, work and play. After gaining three years of experience, you can qualify to test for specialty teams such as SWAT, Crime Prevention, Crash and Traffic, or to become a detective assigned to Vice Intelligence, the drug task force or the auto theft task force. Whether conducting a traffic stop or responding to the scene of a crime, you'll work as part of a team of dedicated professionals who strive to provide professional law enforcement services to keep the Wheat Ridge community safe. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The primary expectation of an incumbent assigned to this position is too attend and successfully complete the assigned, departmentally approved police academy. May perform various non-sworn police related functions within the department while waiting for academy commencement.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED with three years demonstrated full-time work experience
  • Have no Felony Convictions
  • Have a valid drivers license
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:


Knowledge
- Ability to develop working knowledge of Federal, State and local statutes and ordinances; develop working knowledge of proper law enforcement principles, procedures and practices; develop working knowledge of first aid and medical procedures and practices.

Skills - Ability to develop skill in the use of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, related law enforcement equipment, and principles and practices of self-defense.

Abilities - Remain calm in stressful situations; apply logical thinking in determining a proper course of action in a minimum amount of time; make sound decisions and take appropriate action; follow written and verbal instructions; perform a high level of sustained physical activity; communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships; interact and deal effectively with people from varying social and cultural backgrounds; exercise compassion and empathy for persons; share information and work cooperatively with others; follow orders; accept advice and constructive criticism in a positive manner; assert self when necessary; maintain composure and perform effectively in stressful situations; exercise restraint and use the minimum amount of force necessary to handle a given situation; adapt to changes in working; apply appropriate safety precautions in hazardous and potentially dangerous situations.

Supplemental Information

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS THROUGHOUT POLICE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
National Testing Network Assessments- Successfully complete the testing process within 7 days of invitation. Upon completion an invite will be sent to candidates to participate in a panel oral board.
Oral Boards- will be updated for the Academy classes
Background process- Includes a Polygraph and Psychological Evaluation. (all steps must be passed)
Chief's Interview- Upon successful completion of the Background Process an interview will be scheduled for candidates with Chief Murtha.
Drug Screening/Essential Functions- Requirement after passing Chief's Interview
Upon completion of the steps listed above a Final Offer will be given.
(Our process takes approximately 40 days from start of the background process.)

LEAVE PROGRAMS
HOLIDAYS - 10 (8 Hour/Days) Annually
PERSONAL TIME-OFF (PTO): Time accrued is 6.25 hours/bi-weekly for those with 40 hour status. PTO days earned is dependent upon years of service and on status
EXTENDED SICK LEAVE (ESL): Time accrued is 1.54 hours/bi-weekly for those with 40 hour status. ESL earned is based on years of service and status and can be used for personal illness and injury or FMLA after 40 hours of PTO is used.
BENEFITS
Benefits are available the first of the month following date of hire. The City provides a contribution towards medical benefits based on type of coverage and status
MEDICAL INSURANCE
Kaiser (DHMO) – This is a more traditional plan using copays and coinsurance to pay for medical services.
Kaiser High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) - High deductible health plan with the ability to use a Health Savings Account. This plan you pay lower premiums but medical services can be more expensive.
DENTAL INSURANCE: The City provides two dental plan options for its employees. We offer an EPO plan (lower tier plan) or a PPO plan (higher tier plan) through Delta Dental
VISION INSURANCE: The City provides a supplemental plan at your cost for eye care coverage.

HSA: For those that are on the HDHP medical plan. You can use an HSA to set aside pre-tax money for medical and healthcare expenses. The City contributes to the HSA- $800 to individuals annually or $1100 for Employee plus One or Family Coverage.

Medical FSA: Only available to those on the Kaiser DHMO
Dependent Care FSA: You can use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible, employment-related dependent care expenses for your dependent children 12 and under. You can also use this account to reimburse care for dependents who are physically or mentally unable to care for themselves, such as spouses, parents, or grandparents.

Limited FSA: a limited purpose FSA allows you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for Dental and Vision expenses. This plan is only available to those on the HDHP Medical Plan.
RETIREMENT PLAN
401(A) - Immediate eligibility - mandatory participation. There is a mandatory Employer Contribution 11% of salary and a mandatory Employee Contribution 10% of salary. There is a 7 Year Vesting period.

457- Voluntary program where employees can contribute on a pre-tax or post-tax basis

Roth IRA- after-tax payroll deductions can be done to contribute to a Roth IRA
LIFE & DISABILITY
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY - A benefit of 60% of your monthly income, not to exceed a weekly amount of $1,000 up to a 13 week period (includes 30 day waiting period) should you become disabled.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY - If you become disabled, the benefit is 60% of your monthly income to a maximum of $6,000/month. Payments begin 90 days after absence from work.
GROUP TERM LIFE AND AD&D - The City pays for life insurance plus Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage equal to 1 1/2 x's the employee's annual salary up to $150,000 max plus $2000 life coverage for each dependent.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS/PROGRAMS
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - Services are available for six (6) free counseling sessions per case; legal and financial advice is also available.
WELLNESS PROGRAM- Premium deductions and annual incentive levels are offered to encourage participation in the wellness program. The City uses a social media platform called Sonic Boom to help encourage each other to be healthy and to create and participate in healthy competitions. Discounts are also offered on City of Wheat Ridge Rec Center passes.

RECOGNITION PROGRAM- Different annual events are done to recognize our employees such as an awards banquet, pancake breakfast, and Summer BBQ to recognize our employees. We also have a Give-A-Wow recognition platform so employees can capture each other doing great things and give each other points. By building points in this platform you can buy many different items online from gift cards, to electronic/clothes, and even PTO.

SAFETY PROGRAM- This program raises safety awareness and instills proactive behavior to create a safe working environment. Safety training is offered for continued growth.
VOLUNTARY LIFE INSURANCE- You have the opportunity to purchase additional life and AD&D insurance of up to $300K (or the lesser of 7 times your annual earnings). Additional Spouse and Children insurance can also be purchased.
ACCIDENTAL & CRITICAL ILLNESS COVERAGE- these voluntary coverages are offered to assist employees injured or going through a major medical event.
