FELLOWSHIP TITLE: Humanitarian Assistance FellowLOCATION: Hybrid: In-person in Washington DC for week 1 and virtual for week 2 DURATION: Two-week training from June 10 through June 21, 2024 EMPLOYMENT: Temporary PHI employee that is expected to start on June 9 or June 10, 2024. WAGE: Full pay range for this position: $21.07 to $29.13 per hour. The wage for this position is $24.04 per hour Fellowship Opportunity DescriptionIntroduction:Generation Next Humanitarian fellowship is seeking Minority Serving Institution (MSI) graduates to become the next generation of humanitarian professionals. This two-week training program aims to create a unique training experience for graduates of Minority Serving Institutions to enter the humanitarian field and develop the skills necessary to consider pursuing a career in humanitarian assistance. Reporting structure:The Humanitarian Assistance Fellow will receive technical and professional direction from the Performance Manager. Essential Duties and Outcomes:Attend the training program in person in Washington DC in the first week and virtually in the second week. The essential duties and responsibilities listed below are examples of what the Fellows are required to perform during their training. Develop foundational skills in humanitarian assistance:
Learn the foundations of humanitarian action
Learn the international humanitarian coordination system
Learn the cluster approach
Learn how to plan and fund appropriate responses to human-made and natural disasters
Learn international law and humanitarian standards
Learn complex humanitarian emergencies
Meet and learn from humanitarian assistance professionals
Meet current fellows in the program
Attend security awareness training
Develop office skills:
Develop office norms and cultures
Develop intermediate Microsoft office skills
LEARNING OUTCOME:At the end of the program, the fellows will:
Develop an understanding of the range of career paths and technical areas (sectors of intervention) within humanitarian assistance
Develop an understanding of the humanitarian architecture, systems, and processes
Identify and leverage a network of peers within the humanitarian assistance field to enhance peer support learning
Develop or strengthen communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
Fellowship RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from a federally recognized minority serving institution with no more than 2 years post-graduation (for a list of Minority Serving Institutions, follow this link: https://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/idues/2023eligibilitymatrix.xlsx)
At least one year of combined experience to include volunteering at civic, social or non-profit organizations, internships, research projects, and school projects among others
Other Qualifications
Demonstrate collaborative interpersonal skills to work across a variety of cultures and with remote team members
Strong oral communications and written skills
Proficiency in Spanish is required for one of these fellow positions. For other positions, proficiency in Spanish is not mandatory but is strongly preferred
US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
