-Participate in Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Autopsy services, and Clinical Pathology workload.
-Interpreting clinical laboratory data and communicating conclusions effectively with lab staff, providers, residents and students; providing consultation and advice to lab staff and providers when appropriate.
-Review microscopic specimens (peripheral smears, body fluids, crystals, Gram stains, CSF etc.) upon request by medical technologists and providers.
-Performing gross and microscopic examination of surgical and cytologic cases and providing final pathology reports in a timely manner.
Perform grossing of surgical specimens using standard practice techniques.
Use appropriate QA, Snomed and CPT codes.
-Performing post-mortem examinations and ensuring that the provisional and final reports are completed in a timely manner.
Educate ordering provider about the clinical significance of the findings, and present at M&M conference if requested.
-Performing frozen sections and gross intraoperative interpretations as needed.
-Representing the Pathology laboratory at functions or multidisciplinary clinical committees such as tumor conference, transfusion utilization review committee, ICU committee and others as assigned.
-Taking Anatomic and Clinical Pathology call for both Leavenworth and Topeka VA hospital labs a week at a time (24 hours per day, including weekends and Holidays) as delineated on a monthly rotating schedule.
Any changes made to the call schedule will need to be coordinated among the Service Chief and other staff pathologists.
-Providing rapid assessment for adequacy of specimens obtained by fine-needle aspiration.
-Interpreting bone marrow biopsies, peripheral smears, body fluids, KOH and wet preps.
Provide rapid assessment of peripheral smears if medical technologist is suspicious of the presence of blast cells, acute leukemia or other urgent finding.
-Provide rapid consultation on transfusion reactions and other urgent transfusion needs.
-Inform the Chief of Service for leave approval, tour of duty, time off from regular tour of duty or any related issues.
-Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPE) and Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE).
-Fulfilling all requirements related to CAP, The Joint Commission (TJC), and VHA pathology policies and procedures, and other appropriate regulatory agencies.
-Tour of duty is 8:00 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m.
Monday thru Friday.
Each full-time provider is required to work a minimum of 80 hours per pay period (every two weeks) unless on leave status.
-All Pathology physicians will work within their privileges at all times, unless necessitated by an emergency.
-Participate in any appropriate Pathology task as designated or delegated by the Chief of Pathology.
