Direct Support Professional Job Description

Overview:

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) help people with disabilities or mental illness live independent lives by providing support and services. DSPs work in our clients homes to provide them with daily support and care based on their individual needs.

DSP’s should be flexible, empathetic, adaptable and engaging to help our individuals develop skills and live their lives to the fullest.

Qualifications:

-Direct Support Professionals must be 16 years of age or older. Some restrictions apply to minors in the workplace. Please see the Employee handbook for Age of Employment policy.

-They must have the ability to pass a Minnesota Department of Human Services background check.

-Must have a valid license and clean driving record and/or pass a Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicle check. This is required to be able to drive the company vehicles for client outings and appointments.

-Must be willing to work in all the company house locations, participate in client or company outings, move to other locations to provide for care and coverage per company and client need.

-Must have basic computer skills for daily charting and communications.

-Willingness to commence in in-house training as needed for onboarding and continued education after hire.

-Must have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills and good decision making skills.

-Must have the ability to build and maintain good therapeutic relationships, professional relationships, as well as work in both a team environment and independently when needed.

-Basic math skills.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, push, pull, walk, stand, sit, walk up stairs, reach above their head, lift from the floor, grip, grasp or grab items as needed.
  • Must abide by all company policies and procedures
  • Must acquire and maintain comprehensive knowledge regarding Vulnerable Adult Act and Rule 245D and the implementation of these requirements
  • Upon hire one must familiarize himself/herself with the company's current enrolled clients, their programs and maintain a comprehensive knowledge about the enrolled client’s behavior and service plans.
  • Address and follow up on client’s requests and concerns.
  • Assist clients with weekly/monthly budgeting.
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions, complete all continued annual, monthly or semi annual required training, and attend the quarterly training sessions to stay current with required training.
  • Able and willing to work independently or as part of a team with any client, in any home needed. Based on client care needs and ability.
  • Be willing to assist in household care per policy. Such as cooking meals, cleaning, housekeeping, laundry, and assisting clients with cleaning their rooms or common areas per their programming plans.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the mandatory reporting requirements and processes.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the Rapid Response Activation Policy and Procedure.
  • Ensure policies, procedures, and client programming are being followed per State and company guidelines. Report and/or communicate violations quickly and per protocol.
  • Communicate effectively with their leadership teams: House Managers, Program Director, Case Managers, Development teams, Supervisors, Shift leads, and the Administration team.
  • Follow communication protocols when communicating with internal and external teams.
  • Follow all Crisis Prevention Institute training when assessing situations that need to be de-escalated. Using the techniques and manual restraint protocols to be compliant with company policies and maintain the safety of our clients in all situations.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients, staff and other outside agencies.
  • Complete company required medication administration training and follow those requirements with administering medications.
  • Participating in peer assessments of performance and job duties as well as participating in company climate checks.
  • De-escalate situations where clients are potentially verbally and/or physically aggressive in their behavior.
  • Prepare required documentation according to company guidelines and policies.
  • Promote and participate in client involved activities and outings.
  • Properly handle all medical or behavioral concerns.
  • Provide a safe environment for all clients when in the home or on outings.
  • Is punctual and in compliance with attendance requirements.
  • Represents the company in a positive and professional manner in their actions and when communicating with internal and external teams.
  • Other duties that may be assigned by your immediate supervisor or the management team.
