BIOLOGY TEACHER 1.0 FTE Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School, 7-12, Public Charter School located in South Hadley, MA
Job DescriptionPVPA has an opportunity for a full time Biology Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. We are looking for a reflective practitioner who collaborates effectively with colleagues and understands the varied needs of students in grades 9-12. An ideal candidate is a strong educator well versed in biology curriculum that includes laboratory skills, biochemistry and cell biology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, biodiversity, ecology, and evolution. Students are expected to display their knowledge both individually and through group work in a variety of ways, including written pieces, class activities, homework, assessments, quizzes and tests, and lab work. This course allows students to make a connection between biology in the classroom and biology in the “real world," as well as prepare students for the Biology MCAS test. Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum & Instruction, you will be responsible for:
  • Teaching five classes per semester
  • Use an anti-racist, anti-oppression framework to prepare curricula and instructional materials based on learning objectives.
  • Plan curricula and prepare course expectations and materials.
  • Supervise students during non-class time (ex:lunch) as required.
  • Assess student work and provide timely feedback to students and parents via the PowerSchool online grading system.
  • Apply PVPA standards based grading system to report on student course progress and achievement.
  • Attend and participate in regular collaborative team meetings with faculty and school-wide professional development activities.
  • Attend and participate in meetings with students and/or parents as scheduled, including open house and parent-teacher conferences
  • Coordinate with special educators to address the diverse needs of all learners
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications; Preferred QualificationsThe successful candidate will minimally hold a BA degree, be able to pass a background check (CORI/SORI & Fingerprinting) and be computer literate. Preferred qualifications include:
  • Two or more years of experience teaching biology in a public or private school, preferably at the secondary level.
  • Eligible for “Highly Qualified” teacher status (MA Certified or able to pass Communication & Literacy and Biology MTEL exam within 1 year).
  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement
  • Experience with high school students
  • Knowledge of discipline curriculum standards
  • Interest or experience in the arts
Other Information/InstructionsSalary Range: $42,000 to $66,705 Annually. Additional $1,000 stipend for individuals who hold a DESE license in subject area and potential for bonus at the end of the fiscal year.
2024-2025 school year consists of 180 school days plus 5 professional development/curriculum work days and a thirty-five hour work week that includes, on average, three class blocks per day of collaborative/independent work time.
