City of Sandpoint is Hiring a Swim Instructor Near Sandpoint, ID

The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide instruction in swimming skills and general water safety to those participating in the City of Sandpoint swimming program. An employee in this class performs the duties of other employees in the Department as required. The Swim Instructor’s work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Services Superintendent, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment or other environment that may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions, excessive noise, or potential danger.

  • Provides education in basic water safety.
  • Tests each participant on swim skills and water safety material.
  • Completes course completion certificates for each participant.
  • Evaluate participant’s skill level and group participants accordingly.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Assists other staff with assignments and duties as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Basic water safety techniques.
  • Correct stroke techniques.
  • Drills and games to engage participants and enhance their enjoyment of the water.

Skills in and Ability to:
  • Communicate with both children and adults.
  • Supervise participants in an open water environment.
  • Teach swimming skills and water safety to participants.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with the public, peers, the City Council, and other City Employees.
  • Demonstrate effective customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Evaluate and analyze customer needs to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Learn department functions thoroughly to provide general information and explain detailed department processes and procedures.
  • Perform time management, organizational, and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set task priorities.
  • Use logical and creative through processes to develop reasonable solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
  • Work independently, with minimal supervision and make appropriate decisions in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Work well under pressure and maintain a calm and professional demeanor, under stressful or adversarial conditions.
  • Demonstrate patience, integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performing of assigned tasks.
 
Physical Demands:
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, monitor participants and analyze technique.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodations, which permits the employee to demonstrate swim skills, grip, and assist participants with techniques.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stoop, bend, swim, jump, crouch, sit, and stand.
  • Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand, wrist, and arm movements. 
  • Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 25 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching, and reaching.
Education and Experience:
  • Current Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work of a Swim Instructor.
 
 
Other Qualifications:
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification preferred. All employees in this classification must hold this certification within 30 days of hire and maintain current certification.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
