Join our team as a skilled boat operator responsible for piloting research vessels in the Puget Sound.
Envision yourself in the field, conducting recreational test fishing and on-water boat surveys for recreational salmon fisheries.
Perform advanced technical scientific duties and independently execute established and new sampling protocols and procedures.

Picture yourself,
Piloting WDFW research vessels to conduct recreational test fishing using a variety of fishing methods including weight and bait, downrigger, jigging, and divers.
In this dynamic role,
You will be operating and selecting test fishing locations with little supervision, training and directing staff in the techniques used while test fishing and making changes to gear and fishing locations based on environmental factors.
With your experience,
You will operate outboard and inboard / outboard motorboats, including trailering, coming along side other boats in motion, launching, and docking boats under various weather conditions.
We are seeking a candidate,

Some of what our Boat Operator and Test Fisher will enjoy doing,
Conduct test fishing and on the water boat surveys in the Marine Areas of Puget Sound for salmon fisheries :
Sample predominantly recreational fisheries for salmon, marine fish and shellfish catch to determine the catch per unit of effort and species composition to obtain valid sport catch estimates :
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
Schedule :
24 / 7 non-scheduled, 40 hours per week. Typically, 8 - 10 hours per day between 5 : 00 A.M. - 11 : 00 P.M.
Weekend and evening work is required.
Travel Requirements :
May be required to use personal vehicle when an agency owned vehicle is unavailable.
Tools and Equipment :
Outboard motorboat operation including proper and safe fueling, boat trailer, GPS, compass, data logger, fishing tackle and gear including downriggers, iPad, iPhone, electronic accessories, electronic sampling equipment such as a coded wire tag detector (CWT), weighing scale, knives, forceps, head lamp, measuring board, tally counter, tide book, totes / bins, paper forms, labels, scale cards, pencils, pens, clipboard and scissors, personal floatation device (PFD), WDFW apparel, gloves, rain gear and copies of current sampling and administrative manuals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Please Note : College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.
Certifications / Licenses :
Valid Driver's License.
