TITLE: HEAD COACH Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program
  2. Work requires three year of experience in head coaching responsibilities and procedures or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  3. High energy level with outstanding interpersonal skills; reliable, self-starter who can work independently or as part of a team; ability to adapt, be flexible and tolerate stress.
  4. Prefer certified teacher with successful head interscholastic coaching experience

REPORT TO: Athletic Director

J O B GOAL: Successfully develop student-athletes in the hockey athletic program committed to academic and athletic excellence. Lead the delivery of a positive educational based athletic experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Hold appropriate knowledge of the school’s mission, philosophy and objectives. Knows, understand, support, and adhere to the rules, regulations and philosophies as set forth by governing agencies of the sport, as well as University School, WIAA and NFHS.
  2. Show a willingness to establish goals and evaluate whether these goals have been met. Demonstrate ability to offer constructive criticism to players and other staff when necessary and help to improve the area being criticized. Exert firm, consistent and fair discipline while being sympathetic, tolerant and patient with her/his athletes and colleagues.
  3. Provide the leadership and positive attitude that produce maximum effort by participants. Show self-control, poise and emotional stability in all areas related to coaching responsibilities including cooperation in the sharing and the use of facilities. Possess an appropriate sense of humor.
  4. Provide an example of professional, fair, honest, and ethical behavior in her/his relationship with players, staff, officials, parents, and opponents. Actively promote student safety, dignity and respect.
  5. Express enthusiasm about athletics while working with students, parents and School personnel. Contribute to the School's understanding of the whole child and grow in understanding the developmental needs of the children with whom they work. Be interested in athletes during the off-season as well as in their classroom efforts.
  6. Communicate effectively with: media, parents, staff, support staff, faculty, other head coaches and staffs, athletic leadership team and players.
  7. Be dedicated to all phases of coaching, organize, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate practice sessions and related activities with proper attention to players' mental and physical well-being. Make provision for pre- game as well as post-game details. Set up the mechanism for scouting opponents. Meets team promptly for meetings, practice and games.
  8. Keep informed of modern trends, techniques, and strategies; and apply new trends where applicable. Participate annually in professional clinics, workshops or conferences, as well as reading current literature available in her/his area of endeavor. Understand the proper care and prevention of injuries.
  9. Cooperate with all athletic department personnel in the maintenance of timely and satisfactory records; budget, inventory, physicals, statistics, eligibility lists, awards plus non-conference and transportation schedules as well as keeps Athletic Leadership Team informed about unusual events within the sport.
  10. Work cooperatively with the equipment manager in implementing an adequate system for handling equipment and uniforms; demonstrate proper care of facilities. Accept responsibility for supervision of the locker room and Fitness Center as required.
  11. Show a willingness to create a compelling program where roles are clearly defined, opportunities are provided for all; recognize contributions, impress upon the athletes and parents that their efforts are valued.
  12. Show a willingness to foster service to others with in your program. By taking part in community service, students gain confidence and self-worth while helping others.
  13. Participate as a positive team member in the development and support of excellence within the Athletic Department. Perform other duties assigned by Athletic Director.
