Position Purpose:

The Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) fulfills a unique role in the support and recovery from substance abuse disorders. A PRSS is a person in recovery from a substance abuse disorder, who has been trained to work with others on his/her road to recovery. This training incorporates the PRSS’s recovery experience as a means of inspiring hope in those they serve, as well as providing a positive role model to others. There are many positive roles that a PRSS can fulfill in an organization based on their skills, experience, education, and desires. Peer Recovery Support Specialists offer the advantage of lived experience from substance abuse. They know the journey to recovery is real and attainable because they have traveled the path.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· The PRSS will use their personal experiences to develop meaningful and trusting relationships with clients, acting as a mentor. The PRSS provides the client an example of what they can strive for in their recovery.

· The PRSS link up with various community organizations and resources to provide additional support for the clients, particularly as they transition from recovery back into the general community. This can include healthcare, housing, job assistance, and additional treatment services as well as support in the task of finding or re-integrating with friends, family and outside communities.

· In order to support the facility, the PRSS handles some of the logistics of patient arrival and departure. This includes arranging or providing transportation for the client, managing follow-up appointments, and working with the facility administrators and discharge staff members.

· Provide general health and behavioral health education.

· Assist with clinic services, community health promotion and disease prevention events in presenting health education to individuals and community.

· Responsible for liaising between clients, family members, the community and healthy care providers to ensure clients and families understand conditions and treatment.

· Submit monthly reports to supervisor.

· Provide documentation required under tribal and funding requirements in an appropriate timeline.

· Maintain timely and accurate documentation of peer encounters and data.

· Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA policies.

· Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

· High School Graduate/GED

· Minimum of three (3) years working with adults to address their health or behavioral health needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Positive healthy role model and advocate.

· If in recovery, 2-years of stable recovery.

· Reliable, dependable worker.

· Communication and organizational skills.

· Professionalism toward sensitive nature of program and confidentiality issues.

· Ability to build work relationships with multiple entities.

· Ability to provide crisis intervention services in a calm and professional manner.

· Must be self-motivated and persistent.

· Knowledge of culturally sensitive needs to the Native American community.

· Basic computer and internet skills.

· Willingness to work flexible hours based on the needs of the caseload.

Certifications:

· Valid Driver’s License and insurable.

· CPR/First Aid/AED certification within 6 months of employment.

Conditions of Employment:

The Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma operates a drug-free workplace.

· Must submit to and pass applicable drug test, TB test, and Physical.

· Must pass background investigations for suitability of character identified in accordance with

the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, and Child Care and Development Fund, 45 C.F.R. § 98.43(a)(2).

· Adhere to all work rules, policies & procedures, and safety standards.
