Position: Child Nutrition Field Specialist
Reports To: Supervisor, Child Nutrition Department
QUALIFICATIONS:
* The position requires a person who is intelligent, energetic and well-mannered with a pleasant personality
and who will present a good impression of the Child Nutrition Department at all times.
* Required education includes associates or bachelor's degree in dietetics, or a degree in a business/IT or
related health field with large scale food service operation experience, as designated by USDA Professional
Standards in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
* This person must possess extensive knowledge of the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast
Program and other School Nutrition Programs.
* The person must have extensive experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and
comparable Google applications. The person must be skilled in standard office equipment as well as
computer applications, typing, telephone etiquette, letter composition, inventory, bookkeeping and general
office procedures.
* The person must have the capacity to be trained in point-of-sale software applications, customer service
software and any other systems needed. This person should be willing to learn and integrate new
technologies and train other staff members on their use.
* This position requires exceptional communication skills with district staff, child nutrition staff, parents, families,
supplier representatives, administrators and co-workers.
* This position requires a very good attendance record.
* This position operates in an office environment, as well as a food service operation. This person must be
able to work safely in both areas.
* This position requires good math skills with a high degree of accuracy in counting currency.
* Physical demands include limited lifting up to 40 lbs with lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10
lbs. The job requires walking, standing, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing. This
position may require substantial standing up to 6 or 7 hours/day.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as office contact with school district personnel, child nutrition staff, business representatives, and
general public.
2. Serves as contact on students' meal accounts, handling parental inquiries via calls and voice mail and email.
3. Acts as the primary contact for kitchen managers and staff in all aspects of the department's point of sale
systems. Installs/upgrades and maintains the POS software and proper functioning of the registers in all
buildings.
4. Ensures the Point of Sale system is updated with relative purchase/meal items and current pricing. Ensures
that register screens are equipped with the proper display of buttons.
5. Acts as the primary trainer to all staff on use of the point of sale system as a register and for back of the
house information management.
6. Prepares interface file email and telephone reminders that are sent to families when student meal accounts
fund balances are low or negative.
7. Count receipts and prepare daily bank deposit of cash and checks. Reconcile bank records and deposits on
a monthly basis.
8. Prepares the free and reduced-price lunch materials for distribution at the opening of school; makes summer
contacts as directed by the Supervisor of Child Nutrition.
9. Processes free and reduced-price lunch applications, using the pre-programmed software available; contacts
parents/guardians for further information if necessary; works with the Supervisor or Asst. Supervisor when
situations arise regarding free and reduced-price lunch applicants and their families/households.
10. Troubleshoots software/hardware problems on a daily basis; takes corrective action or seeks professional
assistance.
11. Performs annual rollover of POS data for next school year, in coordination with the MCS Data Specialist and
software company.
12. Prior to annual rollover, prints all summary reports for school year before close of fiscal year.
13. Trains newly hired cashiers; provides support and advice to veteran cashiers. Responsible for all cashier
training materials/manuals.
14. Makes necessary corrections to cash terminal screens.
15. Maintains Key Control Cabinet (under the direction of the Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor).
16. Oversees maintenance of vending machines, including proper filling, inventory of goods and collection of
funds from the vending machines. Responsible for preparation of correspondence, newsletters, memos,
reports, training materials, and other information originating in the Child Nutrition Office.
17. Able to help move products between kitchen facilities should the circumstance arise.
18. Acts as primary trainer for new and existing staff in the areas of food safety and sanitation, production records
and food production.
19. Helps with hiring and onboarding new staff of the Child Nutrition Department in collaboration with the
Supervisor and the Assistant Supervisor of Child Nutrition.
20. Help with the scheduling of staff and substitute staff to ensure that kitchens have adequate staffing. Help with
attendance and tardiness records of all Child Nutrition staff.
21. Observes operations at school sites to analyze for process improvement and ongoing training needs.
22. Collaborates with Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor in the areas of student participation and marketing of
the program.
23. Collaborates with Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor in the performance evaluations of child nutrition staff
and kitchen managers.
24. Perform such other assignments as may be directed by the Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor of Child
Nutrition.
25. Provide data and menu design support for menu planning as directed by the Supervisor/Assistant Supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 260 days
