CSOs must enjoy interacting with coworkers, as well as, the public while being both a self-starter and a team player. CSOs must be able to multi-task and change duties throughout the day. CSOs are subject to all types of weather conditions, as well as noisy conditions (sirens, radio traffic, telephones, alarms). CSOs must be able to learn, follow, and apply JPD rules/policies/procedures, and CBJ ordinances. CSOs must be able to learn and easily navigate numerous computer programs throughout their shift; must read, understand, and clearly communicate orally and in writing the English language; must be able to physically move traffic barricades and various objects weighing 40 pounds or less. CSOs must remain calm, decisive, and diplomatic during stressful or volatile circumstances.THE BENEFITS OF JOINING OUR TEAMWorking as a Community Service Officer for the Juneau Police Department is a personally rewarding and challenging career that has a significant positive impact on the community. CSOs receive about 6 months of on-the-job training to learn computer systems, how to handle calls for service, learn defense tactics, as well as become familiar with various CBJ ordinances they will be responsible for enforcing. The Juneau Police Department has an Employee Wellness Program in addition to the excellent benefits through CBJ. JPD also has an in-house fitness room supplied with equipment that is funded and maintained by employees.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING You will be a civilian officer of the Juneau Police Department, wearing a department-issued uniform which includes a badge, 2-way radio, and OC pepper spray. You will drive 3-wheeled and/or 4-wheeled vehicles, making regular rounds of assigned areas to enforce ordinances related to parking, wood smoke, smoking, and litter. You will issue verbal warnings, written warnings, and/or citations for any violations found. You will be in frequent contact with JPD Dispatch via police radio and/or telephone. You will investigate complaints and alleged violations of litter, smoking, wood smoke, and parking ordinances. You will initiate contact with citizens, as well as, interact with pedestrians, motorists, and tourists, answering questions or providing assistance. You will appear in State and Municipal Court to testify on contested citations you have issued. You will plan, arrange, and staff special event projects. You will prepare and submit various press releases and radio announcements. As situations arise, you will perform traffic control related to accidents, structural fires, and various community events. You will impound vehicles, completing and submitting the necessary paperwork. You will act as liaison with neighborhood watch groups, Juneau Citizen’s Patrol, and other community groups or committees. You will assist police officers with presentations to schools and other groups on various ordinances, including litter control, the impact of garbage on bears, wood smoke concerns, and other pertinent topics. You will administer the Commercial Passenger Vehicle program and enforce related ordinances and regulations. You will write clear, concise, and accurate reports on daily activities and incidents requiring documentation. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATIONThis position typically works (Monday through Friday) 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM with occasional after-hours work due to community events or callouts. This is a full-time union-represented position. Overtime is paid, and extra leave is granted when working holidays. Your office would be located at the Juneau Police Department located in the Lemon Creek area and has plenty of free, convenient parking available in a secure parking lot.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
**Although marijuana usage is legal in Alaska, such drug use is not federally legal nor is its use allowed per departmental policy. Furthermore, an applicant with marijuana use within the past one (1) year will be automatically disqualified. NOTE: As part of the selection process, applicants are subject to a background investigation that includes a criminal background review, fingerprinting, investigative review, and psychological examination; a medical examination by a licensed physician; and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for marijuana and controlled substances. All information provided by the applicant will be verified. Applicants who materially misrepresent any information provided in the employment process will be excluded from further consideration or dismissed if already employed. APSIN NOTIFICATIONThis position requires security clearance for the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS). DPS may deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance. SPECIAL NOTE: Appointment to Community Services Officer positions will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the background process, medical exam, and drug test results. Department Requirements: Ability and willingness to work shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and emergency overtime, and be available for required on-call duty; attend local and out-of-area training courses as authorized and required; willingness to wear a uniform and comply with department grooming standards; maintain minimum unscheduled absences and a high rate of attendance; maintain a positive attitude and be flexible to change.HIRING MANAGER CONTACT INFOAlyssa Fischer(907) 500-0674ALFischer@juneaupolice.comTesting Note: Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in testing that will be held in Juneau, Alaska on Friday, May 10.
