Summary of Position

Works under the overall supervision of the Summer Camp Coordinator, assisting Summer Camp Leaders with a class of youth (ages 3-6 or 7-12) in recreational activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Summer Camp Leaders in managing Summer Camp programs and activities as directed by the Summer Camp Coordinator.
  • Assists in the supervision of assigned age groups. Campers are 3-6 or 7-12 years of age.
  • Exercises leadership techniques and skills with group members.
  • Assists in organizing methods of arts & crafts, recreation, and athletic games.
  • Responsible for the safety of each participant in the assigned group.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of this position.
  • Performs all daily minor maintenance during the program, including clean up, set up, and break down of equipment and facilities.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies for the Summer Camp Program.
  • Communicates verbally regularly with participants, parents, and the public.
  • Reports urgent situations immediately to the Summer Recreation Instructor and Coordinator.
  • Assist other recreation employees/instructors as needed.
  • May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age. Minimum one (1) year of verifiable experience in working with children. Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License is preferred. Current First Aid training and CPR certifications required (training is part of orientation if selected for position).
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is often required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to operate assigned equipment and vehicles and to adhere to all safety guidelines. Possible exposure to irate citizens.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic first aid and ability to observe necessary precautions to secure the safety of recreation participants and be able to render first aid in the case of minor injury is required.
  • Ability to work tactfully with children of all ages.
  • Ability to work alternate schedules as assigned.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and judgment when handling confidential information.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with effective customer relations.
  • Ability to determine the urgency of situations needing attention and intervene as appropriate and notify the Summer Camp Leader, Coordinator, or appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse group, including but not limited to employees, managerial staff, public officials, children, and the public, while providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to interact well with fellow employees, participants, and parents/guardians is required.
  • Skills in typing, compiling reports, and knowledge of Microsoft programs preferred.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in providing exceptional customer service in person and by telephone.

Salary ranges are designed to be competitive with area industries and municipalities.
SOCIAL SECURITY
The City of Watauga is a non-participating agency.
PUBLIC AGENCY RETIREMENT SYSTEM
Part-time and temporary employees who are not eligible to participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System will contribute 6.2% of gross wages into their tax-deferred PARS 457 Account. The City will contribute 1.3% of the employee's gross wage into the employee's account. Employees are 100% vested immediately in the PARS 457 Account.
MEDICARE
Employees are required to contribute 1.45% of their pay for Medicare insurance.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a benefit available for employees and their dependents to be used for confidential counseling.
DIRECT DEPOSIT
