JOB CONTENT

Position Summary:

(Overall purpose of this position)

  • The Certified Nurse-Midwife cares for childbearing women during preconception, prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum periods, and provides family-planning counseling, gynecological care and limited primary care.
  • Leads holistic, continuous care, safe clinical management, education, and, in some cases, primary care for women’s health needs

Essential duties and responsibilities which must be performed in order to carry out the position purpose summarized above:

  1. Develops a problem list, creates diagnostic, therapeutic and teaching plan. Systematically integrate screening, periodic examinations, health histories and discussions about patient concerns and information relevant to patients and families.
  2. Offers an evidence based childbearing experience to low-risk, medically uncomplicated patients; Encourages active participation of the woman and her family during pregnancy and childbirth.
  3. Attend and conduct patient encounters, as outlined in the Principle of Practice of Neighborhood Family Practice (NFP) and in the NFP Nurse Midwifery Practice Guidelines.
  4. Determine which problems are within scope of practice, and which require referral to a physician according to mutually accepted guidelines.
  5. Communicate, consult and collaborate with other professionals involved in the delivery of total patient care.
  6. Maintain collaborative relationship with physicians in the practice and render care according to the guidelines of a standard care arrangement.
  7. Maintain communication and documentation necessary to fulfill requirements of collaborative/affiliation agreements with physicians/hospitals.
  8. Cover or arrange for coverage of hospitalized patients.
  9. Cover or arrange for coverage of evening, night and weekend activities of NFP.
  10. To complete, in a timely manner, all required Electronic Medical Records (EMR) documentation and other paperwork (including chart records, forms for patients, collaborative forms, etc.) from NFP.
  11. Provides individualized patient teaching and counseling utilizing the midwifery model of care.
  12. Participate in developing and maintaining quality assurance methods.
  13. Attend required nurse midwifery meetings of the hospitals for which privileges have been granted, and participate in committees when requested to do so.
  14. Participate in regular examination and identification of the special needs and health care problems of NFP patients through participation on medical staff and Health Care Committee Meetings.
  15. Participate in community associations and organizations concerning health topics.
  16. Participate in medical staff and general staff meetings.
  17. Serve as a team member to support NFP as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • Must have and maintain a current RN and APRN license from the State of Ohio.
  • Masters of Science in Nursing required.
  • Must have and maintain a current Controlled Substances Registration Certificate from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Board certification as Certified Nurse-Midwife from AMCB or other certifying Board required.
  • Maintain enrollment in American College of Nurse Midwifery Continuing Competency Assessment program.
  • Meet board and state requirements for continuing professional education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to midwifery model of care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scope of practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community health.
  • In-depth emotional intelligence: demonstrated self-awareness, accurate self-assessment, sensitivity and empathy, openness, reliability and consistency. Demonstrated cultural competency and understanding of underserved populations.
  • Ability to effectively relate to people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency: Microsoft Office, data analysis, EMR.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development through independent reading and study, and through participation in continuing education programs.
  • In-depth written and oral communications skills; demonstrated ability to teach patients, families and groups.

  • Ability to see, communicate, hear and utilize electronic communication devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to walk, sit or stand for long periods of time. Requires some lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Work environment is stressful at times.
  • Some bending and stretching required.
  • Frequent evening, night and weekend work. On-call for pregnant patients in rotation with other CNMs. Involves frequent contact with staff and patients.
