City Of Bellevue is Hiring a DIESEL TECHNICIAN II Near Bellevue, NE

This position will be posted until filled.
This position is subject to a veterans' preference.
Hourly Range:$22.43 - $30.71
POSITION TITLE: Diesel Technician II
REPORTS TO: Fleet Maintenance Foreman
SUPERVISES: N/A
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Responsible for the performance of skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy construction equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs minor and major repairs and installations on all City vehicles and equipment including both gasoline and diesel engines. Specialized equipment to include: heavy tractors, loaders and backhoes.
Performs minor and major repairs to all City owned small engine equipment to include: rider mowers, string trimmers, chain saws and other small engine powered equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance on all City vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to oil changes, tune-ups, and adjustments.
Maintains work orders on each job performed, including mileage, man hours, work performed and parts replacement.
Utilizes computerized or electric diagnostic equipment such as A/C charging station, Ford PDA scan tool, GM Tech II system, International Truck, ProLink System and the coolant recovery system. Must also visually inspect to assess the condition of City equipment or vehicles.
Performs welding and fabrication for the repair or modification of parts and equipment.
Operates and road tests equipment to locate defects and to check repair work; utilizes a variety of test equipment; tunes engines.
Performs maintenance and repairs to Fire Department Fleet equipment.
Maintains shop work orders and maintenance records.
Will be required to perform duties on an on-call basis as needed.
*Attendance at the assigned work location is an essential function.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Proficient in the diagnosis and repairs of the current computer-controlled diesel engines and the associated emission systems
Proficient in the diagnosis and repairs of heavy-duty truck frame, suspension and air brake systems.
Proficient in the theory, diagnosis and repair of mobile hydraulic systems.
Proficient in the theory, diagnosis and repair of HVAC systems.
Proficient in the theory, diagnosis and repair of 12- and 24-volt electrical systems.
Knowledge of the standard practices and equipment of the automotive/diesel mechanic's trade along with the ability to apply these techniques to actual work situations.
Knowledge of diesel emission requirements.
Knowledge of specialized diesel diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair methods.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of and ability to utilize the computer to look up information and comprehend the electronic computer-generated manuals.
Ability to locate and adjust defects in all equipment and vehicles.
Ability to establish and build a list of parts needed to make repairs.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
Ability to locate information needed for repairs from books, computers, internet, or manufacturer information.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other city employees and supervisors.
Must have the ability to conduct road test and operate heavy equipment such as loaders, tractors and rider mowers to allow for inspection and diagnosing of complaints.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Must have a minimum of (2) years of experience in Heavy Truck repair.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Must possess and maintain ASE certification in the following areas: Heavy Duty Truck Electrical, Heavy Duty Diesel Engine, Heavy Duty Air Brakes and Heavy-Duty Gasoline Engine.
Must obtain National Safety Council Forklift training certification within 6 months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
Must obtain EPA Refrigerant Certification Section 609 within 6 months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
Must possess a Commercial Drivers' License and maintain it throughout their employment with the city.
Must possess the tools of the automotive mechanic trade at the time of hire.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
An incumbent must have the ability to frequently push, pull, lift and/or carry equipment, tools, supplies and other materials weighing up to 50 lbs., and to occasionally push, pull, lift and/or carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 75 lbs.An incumbent must also possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to use hands and arms to finger, handle, grasp and feel; climb in to, out of and under vehicles; and operate the following: vehicles, computers, tools and any other equipment that is used to perform the essential functions of the job.
Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness and outdoors.Noise level is usually moderate.Vision abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges.
Work requires interaction with the general public and coworkers, and may be stressful when dealing with irate citizens and/or time constraints.
