To support the charter school concept and assist in providing optimal learning opportunities by supplying the services needed to identify health related barriers to education. To addressing each student’s health needs thereby improving their ability to learn.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

STUDENT CARE

• Provide school health services according to state laws, administrative regulations and school policies regarding the provision of such services.
• Monitor student compliance with state immunization regulations and local policies regarding physical examinations.
• Conduct or provide for the screening of students, including but not limited to growth, vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
• Monitor students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
• Assume responsibility for the identification and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
• Contact parents of students regarding health concerns.
• Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
• Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
• Manage a safe medication administration program.
• Educate and train secretaries on basic first-aid administration. 
• As appropriate, counsel with students concerning problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, drug and alcohol abuse, and physically abusive relationships, to facilitate responsible decision-making practices.
• Serve as the case manager for student health plans.
• Maintain and manage first aid supplies necessary to provide services to students.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School. 

LOGISTICS

• Maintain a current health record for each student.
• Prepare and submit reports for the Head of School and the State Board of Health.
• Implement policy on exclusion and readmission of students related to compliance with immunization regulations or related infectious/contagious disease control.
• Advise on modifications to the educational program to meet the health needs of individual students, such as attending IEP conferences or Student Review meetings.
• Maintain the nurse’s office including the inventory, ordering, and distribution of supplies.

STAFF

• Participate with school staff in developing and implementing a total school health program.
• Advise teachers on health-related matters, especially regarding screening of students for health concerns.
• Assist school personnel to establish sanitary conditions within and around the school.
• Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum.
• Provide in-service training about bloodborne pathogens risk control and universal precautions to all new staff members during the staff orientation.
• Act as a resource to teachers as a presenter on health-related subject matter and serve as first-aid trainer.
• Attend IEP meetings for children with acute and chronic health problems.
• Perform additional duties as required for short periods of time to assure the safety of children.

SELF

• Maintain professional competence by participation in staff development and professional activities.
• Maintain a professional development diary.
