The City of Wylie is seeking Maintenance Workers for all divisions within Public Works. The selected applicant will perform manual labor and related work as required.

When assigned to Streets : uses tools and equipment required to maintain, repair, and construct street, drainage, and alley systems.

When assigned to Water or Wastewater : performs installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Supervision is provided by the appropriate supervisor, based upon assigned department.

Staff in Public Works work four ten hour days, Monday through Thursday. Closed on Friday.

Essential Job Functions

  • Keeps work areas clean. Cleans, maintains, and services tools and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads materials and equipment.
  • Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions, plans, maps, and drawings.
  • Submits written reports legibly and completely.
  • Creates reports using the Public Works software system.
  • Hears clearly when working around equipment and in traffic.
  • Uses proper safety precautions when performing all tasks. Exercises good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly.

Operates vehicles according to rules of safety and laws of the State of Texas. Uses proper safety precautions at all times and wears proper safety equipment at all times.

Follows safety regulations, City and department policies and procedures.

  • Presents a clean and well-groomed appearance.
  • Able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather.
  • Communicates effectively with co-workers.
  • Subject to after-hours call-out for emergency situations, as defined by supervisor.
  • Sets up barricades when and where needed for the safety of employees and the public.
  • Completes work orders, including turning in completed forms on a daily basis.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

When assigned to Streets

  • Participates in all phases of street, drainage and alley maintenance, repair and construction.
  • Uses hand saw, skill saw, chain saw, drill press, bolt cutter, pick axe, air compressor, jackhammer, cutting torch, and various weight hammers.

When assigned to Water or Wastewater

  • Works effectively with other crew members to repair or replace water or sewer service lines, water or sewer mains.
  • Makes water or wastewater taps.
  • Installs and / or repairs fire hydrants.
  • Unstops sewer lines.
  • Installs clean-outs in sewer lines.

Minimum Job Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Preferred experience varies based on division assignment.

Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

Specific licenses and certifications vary based on division assigned; the list below is not to be considered all-inclusive.

When assigned to Signals

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year

  • Class "A" CDL with no restrictions except "A"
  • IMSA Level I Certification
  • Pavement Marking Level I
  • TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification
  • Bucket truck certification preferred

When assigned to Stormwater

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year

  • Class "A" CDL with no restrictions except "A"
  • TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification
  • NPDES Certified Stormwater Inspector preferred

When assigned to Streets

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year

  • Class "A" CDL with no restrictions except "A"
  • TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification
  • Backhoe Certification preferred.

When assigned to Wastewater

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year

  • Class "A" CDL with no restrictions except "A"
  • TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification
  • Wastewater Collections Class I
  • Confined Space Certification preferred

When assigned to Water

Must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following within one year

  • Class "A" CDL with no restrictions except "A"
  • TMUTCD Work Zone Safety Certification
  • Class D Water Operator License
  • Backhoe Certification preferred.

PRIMARY WORK ENVIRONMENT : Outdoors

CALL-OUT : On a rotating basis

Retirement benefits with Texas Municipal Retirement System. Contributions by payroll deduction. Employee contributes at 7% level.

City matches 200% of employee contribution. Mandatory.

  • Deferred compensation - Nationwide and Edward Jones. The City does not contribute. Employee contributions by pre and post-tax payroll deduction. Optional.
  • Health / Dental / Vision / Prescription insurance PPO plan. City pays full premium for employee, approximately 47% of dependent premium.
  • Flexible Spending Account - allows for pre-tax deduction for eligible medical expenses as well as dependent care expenses. Optional.
  • Life insurance - 2x annual salary through New York Life. Fully paid by City and 1x annual salary through TMRS. Total of 3x annual base salary.
  • Long-Term Disability for all full-time City employees.
  • Twelve paid holidays : New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and one floating holiday.
  • Vacation - Earn three weeks of vacation in the first year.
  • Sick leave accrues each full pay period.
  • Sick leave conversion to vacation leave (once per year in January).
  • Sick leave buy back (if budget allows; once per year).
  • Bereavement leave, military leave, jury duty leave.
  • Longevity pay $4 per month of service; paid once per year.
  • Workers' compensation benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement - $2,000 per year.
  • Direct Deposit - City of Wylie Payroll will deposit employee paycheck to any bank accepting wire transfers.
