  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree 
  • Must be fully licensed as a Music Teacher (K-12)

Summary

Carter G Woodson School seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated chorus teacher to provide musical guidance and direction to our choir members. To be successful you should be creative, assertive, and passionate about music and be able to interpret various styles of music and demonstrate exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills at all times.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Employment hours are 7:30am-3:30pm Monday through Friday of each school week; Will stay later on occasion for events and practices. 

  • Teaches vocal music ensembles.
  • Extra-curricular and co-curricular responsibilities, which include: Music direction of school musicals, pep rallies, and community events, preparation and participation in various contests such as: All district/state choir, district/state solo/ensemble festival, state large ensemble contest, and any out of state competitions, and makes all arrangements. 
  • Establishes performance requirements, enforces academic requirements, and verifies each student’s eligibility to participate in choir. Decide on appropriate musical pieces for the choir to perform based on the venue and occasion.
  • Organizes and implements vocal music trips in accordance with district policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability. Arranges transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events. 
  • Launches vocal music booster club and supports club activities. 
  • Organizes and conducts tryouts for choir; informs administration and participants of final selections. 
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs musical experiences for the school and community. 
  • Cooperates with the school administration in providing music programs for school productions and, as appropriate, civic functions that enhance students’ performing experience. 
  • Oversees scheduling and other arrangements for the rehearsals and concerts in cooperation with the building principal. 
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of equipment, robes, dresses, etc. Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required. 
  • Submits budget needs annually to the executive director in accordance with established timelines and guidelines. 
  • Orders all supplies and materials necessary for music-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations. 
  • Develops and implements plans for music programs and shows written evidence of preparation as required. 
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences. 
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. 
  • You should also be able to work with various accompaniments to enhance musical pieces as needed.
  • Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional appearance and character.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the schools Executive Director.
