Job Summary :

The Sanitation Manager is responsible for ensuring that all cleaning systems and plant sanitation programs are sufficient to HP Hood LLC standards and continually reviewed for compliance and optimization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to Operations Quality, R&D, and manufacturing facilities in the areas of sanitation, pathogen / environmental control, integrated pest control, new equipment design, installation or construction and other food safety or quality initiatives related to sanitation processes.
  • Review and sign off on the facility’s Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS). Work closely with production MSS leads and maintenance personnel to establish effective and efficient sanitation activities necessary to maintain a food safe environment within the facility.

Evaluate effectiveness of current MSS and determine if changes need to be made based on issues and trends.

  • Oversee Cleaning in Place (CIP), Cleaning out of Place (COP), and preventive cleaning processes of the facility and the inspection of facility equipment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategic sanitation programs, policies, plans and processes to ensure that sanitary performance meets Hood standards as well as supports Food Safety requirements towards regulatory compliance.

Assist in quality issue troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

  • Incorporate principles of dry as well as wet cleaning best practices, allergen management, and allergen clean vs. microbial clean as needed.
  • Manage the Sanitation Chemical contract service provider. Ensure that entry and exit interviews occur and that all action items from reports are reviewed and completed as needed, follow up with corrections, corrective actions, and / or capital requests as needed to ensure closure of action items.

Complete quarterly Sanitation Score Card. Ensure that all chemicals are properly used and labeled. Manage inventory levels in conjunction with sanitation chemical contract provider.

Utilize corporate Sanitation Standardized Operating Procedures (SSOP’s) as guidance, prepare plant specific SSOP’s for equipment and processes.

Ensure all SSOP forms and records are current and completed. Incorporate visual learning and step-by-step processes which are easily followed and comprehended by staff Cleaning Validation and Continuing Verification

Develop and maintain pre-operational programs to visually inspect and swab equipment prior to putting back into service.

Ensure all records are complete and compliant.

Ensure all CIP validations are performed as required. Conduct visual inspections on equipment to ensure proper cleaning.

This includes plate heat exchangers

  • Participate in audits, facility inspections as needed.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by properly implementing the IIPP (Injury Illness Prevention Programs) Always raise safety awareness for chemical handling and equipment operation with Tag out Lock out.

Training

  • Develop an effective sanitation training program for new and current employees as well as contractors, visitors and vendors.
  • Work with Safety Manager to maintain the SDS program and target using less hazardous chemicals at lowest levels to achieve desired results.

Maintain updated chemical lists and assure the safe storage and security of all cleaning chemicals.

Provide education and technical support to assure effective deployment and implementation of corporate sanitation and food safety policies and procedures

Sanitation Continuous Improvement

  • Work cross functionally and collaboratively with all Plant Operations, Corporate QA, Food Safety, and Chemical Supply Vendors to implement and continuously improve on sanitation programs and policies
  • Support plants, engineering, environmental / safety and maintenance personnel in addressing sanitary design issues and in risk-based prioritization of capital projects related to sanitation and food safety.
  • Establish and monitor key sanitation metrics to identify and react to emerging issues
  • Support R&D and Process Technology to ensure new processes and equipment installations are designed to provide proper sanitation and prevent compromises to food safety.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules with Plant Maintenance for all hardware related to CIP chemical cleaning and conveyor lubrication systems and equipment.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections of sanitation systems, procedures, and manual cleaning practices by employees for compliance to standards.
  • Support the plant’s EMP (environmental monitoring program). Review environmental sanitary design and help troubleshoot any environmental concerns.
  • Responsible to monitor water and chemical usage on a regular basis and compare to plan. Keep plan updated as necessary.
  • Must be able to support a 3 shift, 24 / 7, manufacturing operation
  • Help with the reassessment of Sanitation Preventive Controls in the Food Safety Plan after significant changes, unanticipated events or every three years as required by 21 CFR 117
  • Manage the pest control program and contract service provider. Ensure all logs and the pest control manuals and records are complete, current, and reviewed
  • Ensure that entry and exit interviews occur and that all action items from reports are reviewed and completed. As needed, follow up with corrections, corrective actions, and / or capital requests as needed to ensure closure of action items

Janitorial Services

  • Manage the Janitorial program and contract service provider. Ensure all areas are maintained to expectations.
  • Ensure that all action items from reports are reviewed and completed. As needed, follow up with corrections, corrective actions, and / or capital requests as needed to ensure closure of action items

Education and Experience :

Bachelor’s Degree with preference for Food Science, Dairy Science or Microbiology or 5-7 years of food plant operational experience with sanitation experience.

Experience with dairy products

  • Utilization of Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for problem solving
  • Able to collaborate and operate in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Leadership aptitude or team leadership / supervisory experience as an influencer Advanced Computer Skill and knowledge ( Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience with regulatory, third party, and customer audits
  • Experience in successfully addressing environmental sanitation challenges in all areas of plant
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with diverse sanitizing application
  • Certification and / or License Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification or attainment of PCQI within 6 months of hiring
  • A general knowledge of Food and environmental microbiological testing as well as preventative measures including sanitary design and automated sanitation and efficiency is required.
