To maintain the sterile field in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection. To assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instruments, sutures, and sponges during surgery. To function within the OB setting with added skills specific to the setting.

Qualifications

Qualifications - External

Must have completed a post-high school program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Graduate of a Surgical Technology training program or prior related experience and/or training.

Certifications/LicensureAHA Basic Life Support, within 30 daysQualifications for employment of surgical technologists (Tennessee Code Annotated 68-5-101)A. Individuals employed as surgical technologists shall have completed at least one of the following:(1) Hold current national certification established by the National Board of Surgical Technologyand Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA);(2) Have completed a program for surgical technology accredited by the Commission onAccreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP);(3) Have completed an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the armedforces or at a CAAHEP accredited hospital or CAAHEP accredited ambulatory surgicaltreatment center program For the purposes of this chapter, "armed forces" means the Army,Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or public health service of the United States: or(4) Successfully complete the surgical technologists NBSTSA certifying exam.B. Any student who completes a surgical technology program that is in the process of becomingCAAHEP accredited on July 1, 2006, shall be considered a graduate of a CAAHEP accreditedprogram.C. Persons qualifies to be employed as a surgical technologist pursuant to subsection (a) shallcomplete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education or contact hours annually to remain qualifiedfor employment and shall submit verification of having completed such continuing education orcontact hours requirements to their employers. The submission of current certification by theNBSTSA shall satisfy the requirements of this subsection (c).

At least one year of experience in a surgical environment.
Experience in an OB setting preferred.
