Iroquois County Public Health Department JOB DESCRIPTIONS

TITLE: Environmental Specialist / Associate Sanitarian

REPORTS TO: Director of Environmental Health

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours in the physical and/or biological sciences,

OR

Requires an associate degree in the environmental sciences and two years of experience in environmental health.

2. Requires licensure as an Environmental Health Practitioner in training in the State of

Illinois within 6 months of hire.

3. Requires thorough knowledge of the modern principles, techniques, and practices of environmental health.

4. Demonstrates good communication and public relation skills.

5. Requires ability to read and interpret engineering drawings relative to environmental health programs.

6. Requires ability to use own initiative in planning and executing environmental health programs.

7. Requires ability to use laws, regulations, and interpretations in the control of the environment.

8. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling all obligations.

9. Possesses and maintains good physical stamina and mental health.

10. Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured and is in good working condition. Documentation of current automobile insurance coverage required.

SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Associate Sanitarian performs technical field investigation in environmental health programs. The emphasis at this more advanced level of training is on learning and application of general environmental health practices and techniques.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Assists and conducts environmental health program inspections including but not limited to food services, non-community and private water supplies, private sewage disposal, solid waste, nuisance control, insect and rodent control, quality, public and private refuse disposal, toxic or hazardous material sites, lead and tanning facilities.

2. Prepares activity reports and records of inspections, investigations and correspondence.

3. Selects, prepares and submits samples of food, water samples, etc., for laboratory analysis; performs simple field tests.

4. Receives in-service training as required.

5. Assists and makes collections of data, documentary evidence, etc. for use in prosecution of cases of noncompliance and epidemiological investigations.

6. Explains state laws, local ordinances, rules and regulations; offers guidance on sanitation practices and principles; advises regarding improvements or corrections necessary to assure regarding improvements or corrections necessary to assure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

The Associate Sanitarian will not function in any manner other than as trained through the

Illinois Department of Public Health certification process. The above statements are intended to be a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Agency personnel are expected to participate in appropriate education as may be requested or required by their immediate supervisor. New employees must complete the new sanitarian training that includes your annual requirements for continuing education: 3 hours for the sewage program, 3 hours for the potable water program and 5 hours for the food program. Also, 1 hour larvicide and mosquito identification training are required. All agency personnel must attend mandatory educational programs.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $19.23 - $21.98 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
