EXCAVATOR OPERATOR

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary:

The Excavator Operator's primary function is to operate an Excavator at the site of work to construct, maintain, or repair highway, heavy civil, or building type structures; equipment operators are also expected to assist in other duties around the jobsite as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates excavating and loading equipment and heavy machinery including excavators, power shovels, stripping shovels, scraper loaders, and backhoes,
  • Effectively completes excavation and related tasks such as backfilling excavations and breaking concrete or rock using appropriate equipment,
  • Conducts routine inspections before operating equipment to identify needed maintenance or repairs,
  • Performs or requests necessary repairs and adjustments to equipment,
  • Consults digging plans, machine specifications, and safety procedures for specific tasks,
  • Ensures work is completed to specification by observing grade stakes, material levels, hand signals, and other markers,
  • Load gravel, dirt and sand; smooth and grade roads; spread rock and gravel.
  • Trench and construct ditches for installation of culverts, water pipes and sewer pipes; remove silt and debris.
  • Knowledgeable of equipment in respect to checking and maintaining all fluid levels and lubrication,
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects,
  • Estimating sizes, distances, and quantities; or determining time, costs, resources, or materials needed to perform a work activity,
  • Must wear proper attire at all times including: safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image,
  • May be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends, nights, and weekends,
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Must have two (2) or more years of excavator operation experience,
  • Must have a valid operator’s license in DC,
  • Valid unrestricted driver’s license with a clean driving record,
  • Knowledgeable about the machine, its correct method of operation, and limitations,
  • Must display the ability to be a reliable, trustworthy team player and maintain good attendance and safety record,
  • Ability to adhere to all safety rules and regulations,
  • High school diploma or GED required,
  • COVID-19 vaccination is highly recommended,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.

Working Conditions:

  • This job may require you to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
  • This job requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts).
  • This job requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in less than favorable job conditions. These may include, but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment.
