Senior UX Engineer – Remote

Big Think provides a highly-curated library of expert-led, L&D-designed lessons that enable transformation and drive culture by focusing on developing mindsets and behaviors instead of skills.

What You’ll Do

• Bridge the gap between design and engineering – Work with the product and design teams to create components and layouts for Big Think , and potentially across Freethink’s multiple other publications. Evaluate the technical feasibility of designs and provide feedback. Work with other engineers to quickly develop UIs for new tools or components, and to define and deliver new features as functioning interfaces at various levels of fidelity.
• Own the frontend – In partnership with the CTO, and with input from the rest of the team, evaluate and select tools and define processes for UX and frontend engineering.
• Share knowledge and mentor others – Serve as a resource for knowledge about UX and frontend engineering tools, techniques, and processes. Upskill others on the team. Collaborate with team members working on other platforms to find solutions to frontend challenges.
• Create and maintain a component library – Document new and existing design patterns in a component library that the rest of our engineering team can use to accelerate development while maintaining a consistent brand image and user experience across the Big Think platform.
• Advocate for accessibility – Ensure that our user interfaces not only comply with the minimum requirements for accessibility but also embody the ideal, as much as is technically possible. Consider responsiveness of the UI and frontend performance of the platform, especially for our global user base.

What You’ll Need

• Positive, can-do attitude 
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills, including the ability to interact well with stakeholders across the organization
• 4-7 years of experience working with web-based applications as a frontend or UX engineer
• Strong, recent experience with a modern frontend stack, with preference for experience with Tailwind, Vite, and Svelte and lightweight frontend frameworks like Hotwire/Stimulus and Alpine
• Experience with tools for building and managing a component library, such as Storybook and Chromatic
• Knowledge of and experience with integrating a modular, component-based frontend with a Rails (preferred, or similar) backend
• Note that this is explicitly not a design role, though there will be opportunities to collaborate in the product design process – the expectation is that this role would spend significantly more time in VS Code than Figma
