North Carolina Dept of Public Instruction is Hiring a Residential Life Trainer Near Wake, NC

Description of Work

This is a 2nd shift position working Sunday 5:00 p.m. – 12 midnight and Monday – Thursday, 3:45 p.m. until 12:00 midnight (On Sundays the assigned routes to the West, Southwest, East, and Northeast.)
This is an 11-month position.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Residential Life Trainer (RLT) for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS). Governor Morehead School is a residential school, responsible for providing educational instruction to visually impaired students in grades K-12 from across North Carolina.
This position is responsible for monitoring and supervising activities of visually impaired students in a residential setting between 3:45 p.m. and 12:00 midnight. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all students residing in the cottages, Music or Sunshine Houses during 2nd shift. The 2nd shift trainer is responsible for supervising and providing direct care to students. This consists of assisting students with daily living skills such as with home, food, and clothing management skills, bathing, dressing, and grooming, homework, planning and participating in recreational activities, and acting as driver or monitor in state vehicles. The person in this position is accountable for establishing, planning, participating, coordinating, and monitoring a positive program that prepares students to be self-advocating, self-sufficient independent and productive citizens. This position is expected to exercise considerable judgment in the supervision and care of students and in maintaining the cottages/houses. Additionally, some housekeeping duties such as laundry are part of the responsibility of this position. Employee is responsible for documenting student activities and any incidents that occur during the shift. Employee is responsible for following all policies and procedures of the School and for aligning all aspects of the residential learning environment with the ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum).
Employee will provide transportation services for students which include driving a state-owned vehicle, state-owned activity bus and monitoring routes on a weekly run charter bus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience working as a team member (to include parents, staff, and/or members of the community).
  • Documented knowledge to understand the personal, social needs, and/or development of children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities.
  • Experience of basic computer skills.
NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid NC Driver's License. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • Must be able to pass Criminal Background Check.
  • Must be able to pass drug screening.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Applicants with experience working with students with disabilities from 5-22 years of age.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in residential or goal-oriented program for adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
