LOCATION: This a regional position located in the Rehabilitation Services (Occupational Therapy) department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, which consists of Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, including The Clinic at Waimea, The Clinic at Port Allen, The Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Specialty Clinic at Kalāheo, The Clinic at Līhu’e, and The Clinic at Kapa’a, all of which are part of a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.

The Rehabilitation Services department provides comprehensive services in Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapy, providing medically prescribed activities to restore the patient’s physical and psychosocial function to a maximum potential to all patients and departments of the HHSC Kaua’i region facilities, including Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Acute, Behavioral Health, Swing-bed, Long Term Care (LTC), Skilled Nursing Facility, and Outpatient of KVMH and SMMH.

JOB FUNCTIONS: We are actively in search for a compassionate and skilled Occupational Therapist IV (Regional) to join our growing ‘ohana! As the Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible to provide therapeutic activities and direct services; develops and evaluates policies, procedures and standards and conducts studies concerning the provision of occupational therapy services to in-patients, residents and outpatients of HHSC Kaua’i Region as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team. This position works in conjunction with the Physical Therapy department in providing activity programs for the LTC residents at both KVMH and SMMH, including any other duties as assigned. This position may be required to float to and from different facilities within the region as required. The Occupational Therapist IV (Regional) reports directly to the Physical Therapist IV (Regional), position no. 29281, or its designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are credited based on a 40-hour workweek. All applicants are required to provide evidence of all applicable education, licenses, and certifications. 

Education: Applicants for all levels must have a baccalaureate degree in occupational therapy from a school of occupational therapy approved at the time of graduation by the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. in collaboration with the American Medical Association; or in the case of a foreign-trained person, the credentials indicating completion of an occupational therapy education program shall be evaluated and approved by the Certification Committee of the American Occupational Therapy Association, Inc. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed the field work requirements prescribed by the degree awarding school.

Licensure: Possession of a current, valid State of Hawai’i driver’s license, Type 3.

Certifications: In accordance with Chapter 457G of the Hawai’i Revised Statues (HRS), all applicants shall:

  • 1) have passed the occupational therapist national certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT);
  • 2) be registered with the State of Hawai’i as an Occupational Therapist (OT) at the time of appointment.

Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) at the time of appointment.

Experience: One (1) year of professional working experience as an Occupational Therapist under medical supervision. The experience must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the theories, prevention, and treatment of disabilities by occupational therapy and their proper application by the use of activities, which are appropriate to the patient’s physical and psychological condition and utilizing appropriate manual and other physical skills.

DESIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Functional anatomy, kinesiology, neuroanatomy, physiology, neurophysiology, abnormal and educational psychology and related sciences; principles and practices of occupational therapy; occupational therapy diagnostic evaluation and testing procedures; various treatment techniques; trends and developments in occupational therapy; available occupational therapy resources in the community; and, for some positions, principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to: independently apply principles, methods and techniques of occupational therapy; instruct clients and others in the application of the occupational therapy process; and supervise sub professional occupational therapy personnel; interpret and formulate operating policies and procedures, and plan, coordinate and conduct an occupational therapy program; advise and counsel staff effectively; prepare program budget; explain the program of services offered to clients and the public; for some positions, supervise the work of others.
