Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Community Development Director, the Planning Technician will undertake a variety of complex administrative and technical tasks to enhance the efficiency of the Community Development Department and other City departments. Key responsibilities include:

• Handling monetary transactions, calculating and collecting permit fees, and processing invoices for all planning and zoning applications.
• Composing, updating, and preparing agendas for the Planning Commission, Bicycle Advisory Commission Hearing Officer, and Development Review Committee, as well as assisting other boards, committees, or work groups as needed.
• Attending and supporting meetings, including many evening sessions, by taking minutes, operating audiovisual equipment, and providing administrative and technical assistance.
• Managing public notifications for land use applications and other assigned notices.
• Performing clerical and receptionist duties, including answering phone calls and assisting visitors with general inquiries and necessary paperwork.
• Processing department applications and reviewing applications for building permits, plats, signage, zoning verification requests, and site plans associated with building permits.
• Responding to GRAMA requests and other assigned applications.
• Supporting city economic development initiatives, business recruitment, and marketing efforts.

Ideal Candidate

• Availability to attend evening Planning Commission meetings twice a month.
• Three (3) years of experience as an administrative assistant or a comparable background/education. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
• Proficiency in typing at least 35 words per minute.
• Experience with Microsoft Office.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with the public and governmental officials.
• Willingness to obtain certification as a Plan/Permit Technician within 12 months of employment.
