Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Mechanical Superintendent, operate, maintain and repair heating systems, including boilers, furnaces, and all related components necessary in support of TNHA assets.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Maintain and perform preventive maintenance on controls and related boiler equipment.

Respond to work orders or special assigned projects; diagnose and repair mechanical equipment as necessary.

Analyze mechanical systems to determine cause of problems and perform all repairs.

Select and specify materials and parts for repairs, maintenance and improvement of mechanical systems.

Ensure any new mechanical system is fully operational and in compliance with code or manufactures instructions.

Oversee the mechanical interests of TNHA. Make sure all tools and extra parts are accounted for and stored securely at the end of each day and when leaving any village.

Work independently in remote and extreme weather environments.

Tactfully handle difficult situations with sensitivity and good judgment.

Must be able and willing to frequently travel to the proposed job sites on the North Slope to complete assignments.

Perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate percentages such as building heat loads.

Observe TNHA safety standards and regulations, policies and procedures.

Maintain complete confidentiality of all information obtained through professional and client interactions.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

This is an experienced level position and employee must be able to perform a wide variety of heating, plumbing, mechanical and light carpentry work to ensure that TNHA facilities and residential properties are maintained in a safe and effective working condition. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 1. Reasoning skills to include ability to solve practical problems where only limited information exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Required:

• High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.)
• Completion of related technical vocational school necessary to perform the assigned tasks or hands on experience in the related field may be substituted.
• Minimum three (3) years of boiler, furnace work or mechanical systems experience.
• While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to walk, climb or balance; kneel; crawl talk and hear. Vision abilities include close, distance color, peripheral and depth.
• While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to travel by small aircraft, outside weather, extreme cold, wet or humid conditions. The noise level is usually moderate.
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License that meets TNHA insurance criteria.

Preferred:

• American Indian/Alaskan Native (member of federally recognized tribe).
• Boiler or mechanical system certificate.
• OSHA 10 training
• HAZWOPER training
• Ability to read, write, speak and/or understand conversational Iñupiaq
• Experience working among Indigenous cultures and/or in remote rural communities
