Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY

Sound is seeking a detail-oriented Accountant with experience in a 501(c)(3) to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for day-to-day accounting functions, ensuring financial accuracy and timely reporting.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

General Ledger

  • Maintains the general ledger, including month-end account reconciliations/closings, and the preparation of monthly financial statements. Identifies and corrects reconciliation issues in a timely manner.
  • Prepares and records journal entries.
  • Update and maintain reconciliations for various accounts.

 Accounting Administration

  • Helps ensure the organization is fully prepared for its annual financial audit and participates appropriately throughout the audit.

Contract Billing

  • Prepare and send monthly invoices to customers.
  • Review contracts and ensure invoices are complete and accurately set up in the billing system for invoicing and revenue recognition.
  • Manage and track A/R balances and provide status updates.
  • Review and follow up on outstanding A/R balances.
  • Act as primary contact for all A/R and billing issues and inquiries.
  • Participates in development of, and maintains costing models necessary to support contract and grant billing.

Financial Statements and Reporting

  • Generates various monthly financial statement reports; prepares variance analysis and narrative for review with the Director of Accounting and the Vice President & Chief Financial Officer.
  • Generates monthly program financial statements, distributes to program managers, and assists program managers in reviewing their financials.
  • Provides various recurring and/or ad hoc financial reports.

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Supports the organization’s financial planning and business decision-making processes by providing data, updating reports and models, and performing ad hoc analyses as needed.
  • Develops or supports development of pro-forma income statement and balance sheet analyses.
  • Serves as a consultative resource and partner for operations in analyzing and understanding transaction detail and revenue/expense trends.
  • Supports the agency’s financial forecasting processes and models.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides coverage for other team members’ work duties as needed for vacation and sick leave.
  • Serves as a resource to other accounting team members.
  • Completes assigned special projects, independently or as a contributor to or lead of a project team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KEY WORK RELATIONSHIPS

Establishes and maintains positive, ethical, and professional working relationships with Finance teams, Sound team members, clients, vendors, and other professionals.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in business/accounting required.
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of applicable work experience and computer-related skills.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred.
  • Prior 501(c)(3) nonprofit accounting experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and related principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods and processes used for payroll, payroll tax, and withholdings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and accurate keyboarding and ten-key skills.
  • Experience with automated accounting systems (Microsoft Dynamics GP and Management Reporter preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and personal interaction skills, with an emphasis on customer service and support. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Excellent analytical, time management, and organizational skills; detail oriented with consistently accurate results.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, with the ability to provide guidance to others involved in a problem-solving process.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business contracts and/or grants, spreadsheets, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of clinical or technical information and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA requirements that pertain to client information and client privacy.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with team members at all levels, clients, and vendors, and with varying educational, professional and economic backgrounds; ability to work compassionately with people having mental illness.
  • Ability to function as a member of a team, leading within the scope of the position and contributing whenever possible.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, manage multiple duties and priorities, and maintain high standards for accuracy, productivity, and confidentiality.
  • Must successfully pass criminal background checks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

To successfully perform the essential duties of this position, an individual must be able to sit at a desk for four or more hours a day, and use office equipment, including phones and computer keyboards, for four or more hours per day. Individuals must be able to engage vendors, team members, clients and others over the phone and in-person by voice. Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.
