ASSISTANT MANAGER

Full-time, non-exempt

The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoptions, community spay/neuter services, and humane education programs

HSTT’s Thrift Shop is a nonprofit thrift boutique offering quality second-hand and vintage items to benefit animals being cared for and supported by HSTT. The shop will have a curated selection of gently used and vintage clothing, pet-related goods, household goods, small home décor, artwork and jewelry, in addition to low-cost brand new items.

Summary: The Thrift Shop Assistant Manager is responsible for most facets of the retail store’s operations including, but not limited to, filling in as manager on duty on days when the Thrift Shop General Manager is not there, the daily operation of HSTT’s retail area including overseeing volunteers that are scheduled to work on those days, budgetary controls, inventory controls, Thirty Tails Boutique social media sites, etc., while maintaining the highest level of customer service and facilitating a safe and healthy working and shopping environment for all.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: This job description reflects the assignment of essential functions; it does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the HSTT Thrift Store and act as MOD when the General Manager is not in. Balance the workload between managerial duties and assisting customers on the sales floor and provide a pleasant and welcoming environment for all.
  • Support and oversee HSTT Thrift Shop volunteers when acting as MOD.
  • Represent the HSTT brand by maintaining the highest level of customer service.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines effectively, maintain a strong work ethic, and always uphold a professional demeanor.
  • Responsible for the proper accounting and banking of cash receipts at the end of the business day. Safeguard cash at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the overall productivity results in the store in conjunction with the Thrift Shop General Manager.
  • Develop business strategies and strategic relationships to expand store traffic and optimize profitability.
  • Work with, Thrift Shop GM, Manager, and CEO to develop the thrift store annual budget and maintain budget monitoring and controls for a profitable operation.
  • Develop and maintain, with management, Standard Operating Procedures, a Thrift Store Volunteer Handbook, a Cashier’s Manual, and Emergency and Safety Procedures as needed.
  • Enforce pricing policies (one price/no haggle) and recommended strategies for sales promotions to maximize sales.
  • Establish a system for purging items from the shop to ensure a constant flow of new inventory.
  • Maintain online sales platform, including choosing items appropriate for online resale, writing item descriptions, photo upload, order fulfillment, and shipping.
  • Create an attractive shopping environment, including neatly stacking, shelving, and hanging clothing, garments, and other donated goods.
  • Ensure the shop is always organized and clean, which includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting shelves, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, etc.
  • Resolve all issues that arise from customers or volunteers (conflicts, complaints, etc.) when on duty.
  • Analyze market trends, and traffic patterns and identify customer needs.
  • Order and pick up supplies required to operate the Thrift Store (cleaning, cash register supplies, etc.).
  • Work with the Thrift Shop GM and marketing team to promote the shop and the items for sale. With the shop GM, help produce the weekly Thrifty Tails newsletter.
  • Understand and comply with federal and state laws regarding the sale of used items including IRS tax regulations.
  • Ensure that all thrift store operations follow all Federal, State, and local safety regulations and laws and HSTT policies and procedures and ensure a safe environment for all customers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Responsible for the protection of property and building. Report safety hazards, property damage, and personal injuries to the Thrift Shop GM, Manager, and CEO immediately and work collaboratively to resolve issues.

Education and Experience:

  • The minimum education includes a high school diploma or GED equivalent. A college degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Two years of professional experience in retail sales or thrift shop experience and merchandising with a track record of success is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to use a cash register and teach others how to use one, which includes void transactions, discounts, tax-exempt sales, etc.
  • Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity working with cash receipts. Computer fluency in MS Office, Excel, or other donor database software, web applications, social media, and knowledge about the role of technology and electronic payment systems.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, animal welfare, and volunteerism.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills, capable of working effectively with customers, volunteers, staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Energetic, self‐motivated, professional, flexible, and adaptable with a sense of humor, able to multi‐task and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
  • A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license with a driving record acceptable by our insurance carrier and be bondable.
  • Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals; ability to work with and handle animals safely and humanely; understands the lifesaving importance of finding homes for shelter animals.

Physical Demands: This work is performed in an office, shelter, and/or retail environment. It requires workers to walk or stand for long periods, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects, and use fingers to operate computer keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak clearly and communicate.

COMPENSATION: $26-28/hr. plus some benefits including yoga, snacks, and more.

POSITION: Full-time, non-exempt. Weekend work required.
