Hourly Wage: $25.66/Regular/Full-Time

Location: Toppenish

Incumbent is responsible for the implementation and daily operation of a variety of technical and administrative tasks relating to Pacific Lamprey Project. Responsibilities include: 1) implementation and execution of a variety of research and restoration projects; 2) planning and fulfillment of various reporting needs and other contract work statement requirements; 3) coordination and communication of work with staff from various federal, state, local and tribal agencies; and 4) ability to perform work independently as well as with employees that need various levels of daily supervision in the field, fish hatcheries, and at the office. All field work is conducted within the watersheds of Yakama Nation Ceded Lands and usual and accustomed areas.

Duties include field research, data management, and administration of tasks on Pacific Lamprey Project, such as trapping and transporting adults, managing screw traps and other juvenile traps, sampling larvae/juvenile with electro-fishing gear and protocols, conducting various hatchery tasks (artificial propagation, egg incubation, larval rearing, etc.), intensive stream habitat surveys, snorkeling/spawning/fish monitoring surveys, identifying, enumerating and measuring fishes of all sizes, tagging and marking adult and juvenile fishes, maintaining and repairing various field equipment, administering light construction work, establishment and organization of daily operations for staff, recording field and hatchery data, computer data entry and management of data, compiling and analyzing data to evaluate projects, participation and presentation of results for various scientific/technical committees and venues, writing scientific reports, and performing other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the life histories and ecology of Pacific Lamprey & Columbia Basin anadromous fish stocks.

Knowledge of standard fisheries principles & procedures, including sampling techniques for Pacific Lamprey & anadromous fish population estimates & habitat (e.g., electrofishing, spawning surveys, screw trap monitoring, subsampling, & mark-recapture methods).

Knowledge & skill in adult and juvenile fish handling skills in the field & at hatchery environments.

Knowledge & skill in operating equipment & tools used in fisheries work & their safety guidelines.

Knowledge of Yakama Nation natural resource management & administrative policies.

Ability to implement, manage, & prioritize a diverse array of field activities for research & restoration projects.

Ability to coordinate projects internally within Yakama Nation & externally through various federal, state, local, and tribal agencies.

Ability to effectively communicate both orally & in written form & follow oral & written instructions.

Ability to perform work assignments independently & productively with minimum supervision.

Ability to supervise, coordinate, and direct work for a large staff comprised of professionals & technicians & maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to deal tactfully with the public as well as a diverse network of partners.

Ability to develop sensitivity to Tribal culture and values.

Ability to use various computer programs proficiently, including Microsoft Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and mapping tools (e.g., Google Earth).

Ability to work outdoors and perform physical labor in all types of weather conditions & physical terrain (e.g., hiking long distances or in arduous conditions).

Ability to plan, design, administer & implement new projects.

Ability to maintain & analyze complex data accurately & summarize results in various scientific reports using professionally accepted techniques.

Ability to develop & deliver presentations to funding entities, professional organizations, public events & schools.

Ability to incorporate new technologies & procedures to better meet project objectives & integrate with

both Yakama Nation & external databases.

Minimum Requirements:

Must be physically able to work in remote areas under a wide range of weather conditions.

Must be hardworking, self-motivated, and willing to work cooperatively with others in an unsupervised setting.

Required to pass a pre-employment background check.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Requirements:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Fisheries Science or a closely related field AND two years of relevant and successful work experience is required.

Priority will be given to applicants with experience and knowledge of fisheries in Mid and Upper Columbia basins as well as Pacific Lamprey research and restoration.
