Our real estate client owns and operates a variety of apartment communities to suit every lifestyle. With properties in both the US and Canada, they are now seeking a new Controller for their corporate office in Bergen County, NJ.

Job Summary:

The Controller leads the Finance and Accounting functions, ensuring smooth operations and providing team leadership. Responsibilities include regulatory reporting, account reconciliation, journal entries, general ledger maintenance, month-end close, and payroll auditing. The Controller also develops and maintains internal controls and collaborates with the team.

Essential Job Functions:

• Manage the finance team, audits, and payroll.
• Establish and maintain accounting systems and policies.
• Oversee financial analysis, reporting, budgeting, and planning.
• Handle all accounting operations, including Billing, A/R, A/P, and GL management.
• Prepare and ensure accurate financial statements.
• Maintain quality control over financial transactions and reporting.
• Audit payroll and occasionally process payroll.
• Coordinate audits and ensure proper documentation.
• Manage tax preparation and compliance.
• Support general ledger activities and reconciliations.
• Review balance sheets and P&L for cost control opportunities.
• Ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
• Develop and implement internal controls and GAAP-compliant processes.
• Mentor and train finance team members.

Requirements:

• CPA preferred.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required.
• 10 years of accounting experience.
• Familiarity with office/accounting software (MRI, Kronos, ADP, Ultra Tax) is a plus.
• Strong knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures.
• Proficient in Excel and MS Word.
• Excellent time management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Strong financial, numeric, detail, and deadline-oriented skills.
