Taft College is Hiring a Transition Specialist Near Taft, CA

Priority Application Deadline: June 16, 2024. Position will remain open until filled.Transition to Independent Living:Taft College is committed to providing clear and fulfilling pathways for all our students. Our Transition to Independent Living (TIL) Program is an inclusive post-secondary educational experience for students with developmental or intellectual disabilities that also offers on- and off-campus housing. The Program is comprehensive, with curriculum and training that promote acquisition of the functional, social, and career skills necessary for students to live a productive lifestyle.
DEFINITION:Under general supervision coordinate, facilitate, and implement the transition process for students from enrollment. Supervise the transition implementation process for students. Follow each student for 10 years after graduation. Collect data from students, parents, and Regional Centers for yearly follow up of progress of graduated students. Collect and generate data for continued growth of the program. Provide leadership and supervision for career education and vocational components of the program for students while in the program and as they transition to home communities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Facilitate the development of transition plans that include services and supports graduates require to be successful from various social service agencies and circle of support. Transition plans include housing and employment plans and incorporate plans to serve in the community as desired by the student. Coordinate with Education Facilitator, Employment Specialist, and Assistant Direct Support Facilitator when developing transition plans.
  • Oversee and provide leadership for all areas of new student enrollment (tours, intake, application, orientation, etc.).
  • Create quarterly reports for Service Coordinators, maintain ISP, and progress reports.
  • Collect housing, employment, and social data to be used in yearly reports.
  • Provide direction and training for vocational and transition staff. As assigned provide training for all staff.
  • Provide Leadership and Support for TIL Program staff in the implementation of Program’s Goals and Mission.
  • Participate as an on-call status person for the program outside of normal program hours.
  • Establish a working relationship with all components of TIL.
  • Represent TIL at various conferences and outreach events to promote the program to prospective students and stakeholders.
  • Establish a working relationship with local businesses and on/off campus job sites.
  • Ensure participants obtain an internship consistent with their vocational plan.
  • Assist students in processing employment documents for their paid internships.
  • Review and approve hours worked by students in payroll management system.
  • Facilitate employment reviews for students in their paid internships.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and student interviews.
  • Complete reports, schedules, grades, and other assessments within established guidelines.
  • Participate in Individual Program Plan meetings with representatives of Regional Center(s).
  • Facilitate and develop career education services and oversee the Workability III Program.
  • Provide Employment Preparation Services in coordination with Employment Specialist. Employment Preparation Services include: interview techniques, resume development, job search techniques, application preparation, appropriate work behaviors/soft skills, relevant work practices, appropriate grooming and hygiene, self-advocacy, identification of additional support needs, assistance in becoming knowledgeable regarding the impact of employment on a student’s disability and benefits.
  • Coordinate with Employment Specialist on completion of monthly reports to the referring DOR counselor.
  • Establish working relationships with Regional Centers, Housing Agencies, and Agencies that provide Vocational Services and/or Workforce Development.
  • Develop and maintain a data base of contacts for independent living agencies, vocational service agencies, housing agencies and any other agencies that provide services that support graduates living independently.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION:Bachelor’s degree in related field and 2 years experience working with adults with disabilities or similar transition aged population; OR Associate's degree in related field and 4 years of management experience in a program serving people with disabilities who are transition age; ANDSensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Paid experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Experience with Individual Program Plans and Behavioral Support Plans.
  • Ability to provide leadership and direction necessary for program implementation.
  • Certificate or Degree in Disability Studies or Related Field.
  • Experience with Person Centered Planning.

  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading laws, codes, rules, policies and other printed matter.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.

Compensation And BenefitsThe salary range for the position is a Grade 7 on the Educational & Classified Administrator Salary Schedule with a range of $66,582.00-$76,343.00 per year. This is a fulltime, 12-month position. This position is eligible for participation in West Kern Community College District's comprehensive fringe benefits program that includes District paid medical, dental and vision coverage for employees and their dependents, as well as a generous vacation plan. Employees are eligible for membership in the appropriate California employee retirement systems.
