Part-Time WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support staff who guides, informs,and supports the local agency WIC Program's breastfeeding mothers, demonstrating enthusiasm for breastfeeding and a desire to share current factual breastfeeding information with others, and act as a role model for the WIC breastfeeding mother.

Qualifications: High School graduate or equivalent required;must be currently lactating or have breastfed for more than 6 months within the past 5 years). Current or past WIC participant preferred. Communicate effectively in both written and oral form. Meet and work well with the public. Personal breastfeeding experience with a basic understanding of the principles and practices of breastfeeding.

Responsibilities: Must maintain accurate and timely documentation of contacts with WIC Program participants as well as documenting time spent in the clinic and complete required reports in a timely manner. Must have awareness of and understand the limitations of the Peer Counselor position. Provide information to WIC participants and clinic staff on the benefits of breastfeeding and issues including latching on, initiation of breastfeeding at the hospital, supply and demand, and preventing problems. Teaches classes as directed at WIC clinics, contacts prenatal participants, and assists health professionals in counseling participants. Must be able to be available outside the normal clinic hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding difficulties.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $10.00 - $14.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5 – 25 per week
