LEON COUNTY GOVERNMENT is Hiring a Survey Technician I (Open Until Filled) Near Tallahassee, FL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
As a member of a survey crew, this is entry level survey field work collecting horizontal, vertical, or topographic field information for the design of capital projects.
 
NOTE: The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. The Job Description Questionnaire (JDQ) reflects a more detailed description of the position. Neither the job description nor the JDQ constitutes an employment agreement. Both are subject to change as the needs of the County and requirements of the job change.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assists in locating and/or establishing survey points for roadway, drainage, property boundary, construction and topographic surveys. Locates and/or positions survey points using a tripod/tribrach/target, prism pole, GPS receiver, level rod and other conventional survey equipment as necessary. Assists in setting monumentation to delineate easements, right-of-way boundaries and property corners. Sets elevation control points. Locates, measures, and determines type and shape of natural features and manmade objects. Locates and determines type and size of trees and other vegetation. Locates and determines normal size and/or specific dimensions of utilities and stormwater conveyances. Measures distance between survey points with steel surveyors chain or fiberglass tape; cuts and clears brush and debris with machete and axe for survey line of sight.
 
Maintains survey vehicle with required supplies. Maintains adequate supply of expendable survey items such as, but not limited to, survey ribbon, hubs, stakes, tacks, markers, et cetera. Keeps inventory of and maintains non-expendable survey equipment and ensures equipment gets returned to the vehicle at the end of the workday (except survey instruments, i.e., total station, theodolite, level, etc,). Reports all missing items immediately to the Survey Party Chief. Fills water cooler with fresh water/ice. Fills fuel tank when necessary.
 
Operates survey instruments in the absence of Survey Technician II. Operates total station, theodolite, GPS receiver, level, et cetera, in the absence of the Survey Technician II, and will be responsible for the maintenance of survey instruments.
 
OTHER IMPORTANT OR MARGINAL DUTIES
None.
 
DIFFICULTY
Employee receives frequent direction from supervisor and/or lead co-worker. Employee may determine proper points of location to best show topographical features. Employee may assist Survey Party Chief with some routine survey calculations.
 
RESPONSIBILITY:
Supervision Received
Employee must apply standard practice and work with the supervisor who provides frequent direction.
 
Supervision of Others
Position is non-supervisory.
 
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CUSTOMER CONTACT
Employee has contact with co-workers and CAD Technicians to deliver and receive information.
 
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Among the tools and equipment used are a computer, calculator, vehicle, and various survey equipment.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed mainly outdoors while standing. Employee is exposed to extreme weather conditions, biting insects, snakes, and moving traffic. Physical effort is exerted in carrying equipment for long distances, climbing, and standing for long periods of time. Work may involve wading into ponds, canals, and lakes.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to accurately determine dimensions and verbally describe natural features and manmade objects. Basic knowledge of types of trees that grow in Florida. Basic knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and techniques of land surveying.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a high school diploma or an equivalent. Six months of related work experience is preferred.
 
Necessary Special Requirements:
A valid Florida Driver's License and a favorable driving record.
All Leon County employees (regular full-time and part-time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment. Selection Guidelines:
Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interview and reference check.
 
FLSA STATUS: Position is Non-exempt. Analysis: the purpose of this position is to primarily perform physical work as a member of a survey crew.
