PositionDetails :

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, providesindividuals withservice andcareeropportunities to strengthen communitiesandpreserveournaturalresources.

TheCommunityVolunteerAmbassador(CVA)Program combinesthestrengthofanationalleaderinconservationservicewiththeNationalParkServiceto train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

The CVA at KNRI will focus on supporting developing interpretation programming on local history, building partnerships with tribal nations, and recruiting volunteers to support NPS efforts. This will involve :

  • Creating interpretation programs that will educate the public on historic horticulture.
  • Assisting on planting a traditional garden that they can do interpretation programs on thedifferent planting methods.
  • Building a partnership with the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation on seed sharing and create community gardens on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
  • Researching historical cultivation practices and the park can use that information for future interpretation / education programs at the park.
  • Creating an education program on Native food sovereignty.
  • Partnering with the MHA Nation with seed sharing and community gardens that will continue from year to year.
  • Recruiting volunteers from the MHA Nation and will continue to volunteer and be involved in any future park projects

Site Description

Knife River Indian Villages NHS preserves three historic villages sites where Earth lodge people hunted bison and other game but were in essence farmers living in villages along the Missouri and its tributaries.

The site was a major Native American trade center for hundreds of years prior to becoming an important marketplace for fur traders after 1750.

Knife River Indian Villages NHS has volunteers round helping with special events, education programs, school groups and answering questions at the front desk.

Volunteers assist with our gardening program with planting, maintaining, and harvesting the traditional crops grown in our educational garden.

Position Responsibilities :

  • Research, create, and present programs on traditional horticulture practices and food sovereignty.
  • Assist with planting, maintaining, and harvesting the traditional garden in the park
  • Create a partnership with the MHA Nation on creating traditional gardens on the reservation.
  • Create and catalog a seed bank at the park and a sharing project with the MHA Nation
  • Recruit volunteers from the MHA Nation to volunteer in future projects at the park.

CVAMinimum Requirements :

  • Knowledge of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara history and culture or Native American history.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
  • Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.
  • Be able to provide proof of a driver’s license and complete a MVR check
  • Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position

Additional Information :

May work weekends. No park housing is available. Housing are apartments available in Stanton are one-bedroom unfinished apartments with shared laundry area.
