Founded in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coed, academically-rigorous day and boarding school serving approximately 700 students from age three through 12th grade. The campus is located on 140 acres in the historic Sandy Spring area of Montgomery County, Maryland, and the School is approved by the Maryland State Board of Education and accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools.

Summary: Sandy Spring Friends School is seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual for our Athletic Department. The Physical Education Teacher reports directly to the Director of Athletics. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in curriculum development and a deep understanding of various pedagogical approaches in Physical Education.

Responsibilities:

• Teach Physical Education classes to grades PK-8.

• Design, plan and implement physical education lesson plans based on the schools standards.

• Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and communicate those objectives to the students.

• Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students.

• Coach a variety of sports, advise coaches and participate in game day set up.

• Maintain student records following established procedures and guidelines

• Prepare material and classroom for class activities and games.

• Observe, evaluate and assess students learning.

• Meet with parents and guardians to discuss students progress.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or Exercise Science required.

• Experience with the SHAPE Standards curriculum and a minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience.

• Proficiency in social media platforms is desirable.

• Demonstrate proficiency in current professional literature and best practices related to Physical Education, with a proven ability to integrate technology into the PE curriculum.

• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, along with the ability to engage effectively with parents and students.

• Embracing diversity, valuing ongoing professional development, and being adaptable to new initiatives are key attributes we seek.

• Familiarity with Quaker beliefs and practices is advantageous, not mandatory.

Please note that the School has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, which requires that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination, including documentation of a booster shot given five months or more since you completed the final dose in the primary series.

Physical Requirements: Daily desk work includes significant amounts of telephone and computer time as well as mobility around the entire campus. This includes frequent physical activity inside and outside, managing stairs and campus landscape as a part of daily routines.
