Position Summary:

As a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician you will provide information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses. The MT/MLT coordinates a variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to ensure the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory in the performance of tests for the diagnoses and treatment of disease.

Accountabilities/Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides laboratory services in accordance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Implements departmental policies and procedures consistent with hospital objectives.
  • Analyzes blood and body fluids by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures.
  • Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment through calibration and QC; completes preventive maintenance requirements; follows manufacturer's instructions; troubleshoots malfunctions; calls for repairs; maintains equipment inventories; evaluates new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains all records, reports, statistics, logs, files, etc. as required.
  • Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence and compiles statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes.
  • Maintains laboratory supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels; anticipates needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifies receipt of supplies.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Addresses complaints about laboratory functions and works with staff to resolve them.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols; follows identification procedures.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Attends and participates in administrative and other meetings as required. Participates on committees as required/requested.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, professional affiliations and independent reading.
  • Phlebotomy

 Education/Training: 

  • Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science (MT/MLS) from a post-secondary school or college accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education or high school diploma or equivalent with successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist

Experience: None specific

 License/Certification:

  • Current ASCP or AAMT certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days with proof of scheduled exam
  • Current WA State Medical-Assistant/Phlebotomist certificate, or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days with proof of application

Skills: Trained on and able to operate all laboratory equipment, concise oral presentation and written communication skills, computer literate.

Environmental and Job Hazards: Exposure to communicable diseases, (blood borne pathogens) and toxic substances.

Physical and Mental Demands: Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking for extended periods of time, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs. visual acuity and normal color perception.

Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.
