POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Volunteer Firefighter

Pay Classification: Volunteer, No Benefits

Department: Fire Department (FIRE)

Supervision: Works under general supervision of any of Seaside's fire officers

Position & Schedule: Volunteer Firefighter responds to calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Must be able to drill on Wednesday evenings throughout the year.

Position Summary: The volunteer firefighter position is a position used to help with day-to-day operations and response throughout the year.

DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following examples of duties and responsibilities do not encompass all job requirements:

  • Responds to the Fire Station when paged for fire alarms and rides on the fire apparatus to emergency incidents.
  • Enters burning buildings with hose lines as a team member.
  • Operates nozzles and applies water stream on fires.
  • Renders first aid and assists Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) with the delivery of Basic Life Support.
  • Attends drill and training sessions (must attend a minimum of two (2) Wednesday drills per month).
  • Raises, lowers, and climbs ladders.
  • Makes forcible entry into buildings when necessary.
  • Performs ventilation procedures to drive out smoke, gas, and heat.
  • Carries and operates a variety of fire extinguishers.
  • Assists in operations to extinguish and overhaul fires.
  • Assists in the repair, maintenance, inspection and testing of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists in salvage and cleanup operations.
  • Assists in the maintenance of clean and orderly conditions in and about Seaside's fire station.
  • Assists in fire investigations.
  • Keeps informed about the latest fire safety developments.
  • Studies fire department rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Participates in public education programs.
  • Participates in department fund raising activities
  • Participates in department training activities.
  • Assists in the clean-up and control of hazardous materials spills and releases.
  • Assists in the technical rescue operations of the department.
  • Performs all other related duties as required/assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Must reside in the Seaside Fire & Rescue area of response or work within the district and able to respond to calls.
  • All applicants must undergo a background check. Firefighters must not have a criminal background that would make them unable to become DPSST certified.
  • Must be 17 years of age to enter the Cadet Program, and 18 years of age to become a firefighter.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon Driver License upon hire.
  • Must have an insurable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen (the test includes marijuana) prior to starting.
  • All new firefighters must pass a physical ability test.
  • Applicant must be drug free and be willing to submit to drug testing at all times.
  • Tobacco use is strongly discouraged.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles, and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts.
  • Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Employee is exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils.
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Noise levels are usually quiet in office settings, and loud at construction and emergency scenes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM TASKS:

  • Frequently required to sit; talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
