ATEC is Hiring a Mechanical Inspector Near Sealy, TX

Primary Functions:

1. Support Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities, and perform Quality Control functions as established in the Corporate Quality Control Manual and Quality Assurance Instructions, and as otherwise directed by the Quality Assurance Manager.

2. Perform inspection functions for shop as assigned by the QA Manager, to ensure manufacturing adheres to design specifications, drawings and work instructions issued by production control to the shop. This includes in process and final signoffs of work travelers and cut sheets utilized by the shop to track the performance of work and intermediate inspections. Manage, track, and complete work control documents as established by the Quality Control Manager.

3. Have primary responsibility for establishment of quality controls for welded assemblies, and for inspection of in process and final inspections. Arrange for outside inspection services as required, in accordance with company policies and procedures, for special welding inspections and protocols including to implement any special customer requirements for third party inspections.

4. Have primary responsibility for testing and certification of VLI welders, and maintenance of test records.

5. Support the Supply Chain Quality Assurance personnel in review of welding procedures, certifications, records and welding work for outside subcontract fabricators.

6. Participate with the Engineering Department in design reviews for drawings and specifications of complex welded assemblies to clarify and optimize welding instructions for conformance to AWS standards, and considering manufacturability and performance.

7. Perform inspection functions for field activities as assigned by the QA Manager, to ensure field work adheres to design specifications, drawings and work instructions issued by project management to the field team(s). This primarily relates to field welding work, but may also involved general quality control and inspection functions.

8. Perform inspection functions for purchased parts, systems and assemblies to ensure that vendors’ work adheres to design specifications, drawings, quality assurance instructions and plans, and work instructions issued with the purchase order. Includes physical measurement and visual inspection of parts, and review of vendor Material Test Reports (MTRs) and Certificate(s) of Conformance. Ensure that all documentation is obtained, reviewed and determined compliant, and properly archived.

9. Initiate, process, and maintain records of rework and Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs). This includes but is not limited to inspections to ensure compliance to the following activities: a) vendor manufacturing and supply b) refurbishment, repair and installation by a VLI field team c) shop activities including cutting, fitting, welding, sandblasting, painting, storing, identifying parts, packaging and crating, and adherence to procedures and processes implemented under the Quality Management System.

10. Perform or oversee required nondestructive examination work performed by qualified technicians.

11. Assure Measurement & Test Equipment (MT &E) are maintained and properly calibrated prior to use.

12. Generate and control documentation of inspections as required for shop, site or outside Vendor activities. Support the Supply Chain Quality Assurance Manager for required inspections of major subcontractor fabricated products. Some occasional travel within CONUS may be required to perform field inspections of fabricated supplies and/or components.

13. Assist Customer Representatives and auditors in the conduct of shop visits.

14. Temporarily fill in for the Quality Assurance Manager or Supply Chain Quality Assurance personnel in their absence.

Secondary Functions:

1. Assist the Quality Assurance Manager and/or Safety Manager with implementation of the VLI safety program.

Special Requirements: None

Training Requirements: AWS Certified Welding Inspector or Welding Engineer, preferred NDE certification. Must be able to attend, comprehend and complete additional QA/QC training classes as required.

Skills Required: Ability to read, comprehend and interpret blueprints, technical manuals, quality procedures and requirements, plans and specifications for:

1) the manufacture, supply and coating/painting of steel and sheet metal products and assemblies. Includes application of AWS, AISC, and SSPC standards;

2) the manufacture and supply of complex acoustic assemblies including but not limited to air intake baffles, exhaust stacks and baffles, acoustic panels, exhaust augmenters, exhaust collectors and diffusers, and modular enclosures;

3) the manufacture and supply of facility equipment and mechanical systems including but not limited to fire suppression systems, hoists and winches, personnel doors, rollup doors, lighting systems, camera systems;

4) the manufacture and supply of complex ground support equipment including but not limited to engine test stands, adapters, adapter kits, bellmouths and inlet screens, starter air systems, preservation oil systems, fuel systems;

5) the installation, maintenance and servicing of all products furnished by VLI.

Ability to properly read, interpret and utilize measurement tools and gauges for the inspection and measurement of close tolerance manufacturing work as well as structural steel and sheet metal components and assemblies.

Education: A high school degree is required with some college or technical school training preferred.

Experience: A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience working as an Inspector, Journeyman Fitter/Welder, Foreman/Leadman, in a manufacturing environment is preferred but training, education, skill, technical knowledge, communication and organizational ability will be the deciding factors.

Licenses/Certification: As a structural steel and sheet metal fabricator, the majority of Vital Link's fabrication projects are governed by the requirements of the American Welding Society (AWS). Certification as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a requirement. VLI also applies primer and finish paints and coatings. Familiarity with the proper, storage, application and quality control for typical paints and coatings utilized for the finish of structural steel and sheet metal components and structures is preferred. The employee is expected to maintain or obtain during employment a certification to NACE Coating Inspector Program Level 1.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Must be able to proficiently read and interpret fabrication drawings and specifications and be able to effectively communicate the requirements of these instructions to the workforce. Must be able to read and write English well enough to read and understand technical instructions and prepare reports, communicate effectively with all associates, suppliers, and customers required to effectively perform assigned duties. Must be capable of applying sound judgment to all required decisions. Must be computer literate for the relevant applications of Excel spreadsheets, word processing applications, Microsoft Outlook or similar as is applicable. Good organizational skills required. Must have ability to handle multiple tasks, have strong teamwork skills, and ability to obtain cooperation of others in submitting required documentation and reports in a complete and timely manner.

Working knowledge of AWS, AISC and NACE requirements is required. In the performance of his duties to supervise and troubleshoot fabrication activities, the QA Inspector must be physically capable of meeting the requirements to conduct routine investigations and assessments of all product and process audits and inspections. Position requires strong experience and knowledge of steel and sheet metal fabrication, interpersonal and management skills, ability to communicate. The QC Inspector should have good math skills. Must be capable of performing accurate measurements and inspections, utilizing approved instruments, methods, and measurement tools. Must be organized, efficient, and capable of understanding complex written QC and manufacturing instructions. The individual performing the Quality Control Inspection function must be physically capable of meeting the requirements to conduct visual and other inspections of large and/or close tolerance fabricated steel assemblies. Experience Required: Minimum of one year inspection, quality engineering, auditing experience or five years fitting and parts fabrication with one year welding. Other related experience will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Working Conditions: Daily work in an outdoors and in an open fabrication shop environment in all types of weather is required to support customer or auditor visits and inspections, and to perform audits, reviews, and root cause investigations.. The noise level in the outdoors or open fabrication shop environment is often quite high, which may require hearing protection. This position is primarily performed in an office environment, requiring significant sitting or stationary work at a computer monitor, or while participating in meetings. Frequent work in an outdoors and in an open fabrication shop environment in all types of weather is required to support customer or auditor visits and inspections, and to perform audits, reviews, and root cause investigations.. This position is exposed occasionally to flying sparks, metal chips, and potentially heavy dust which may at times require the use of safety glasses, face mask, and protective clothing. The noise level in the outdoors or open fabrication shop environment is often quite high, which may require hearing protection. Frequent travel by car, train or airplane both in CONUS and OCONUS may be required in support of significant general construction or field maintenance service projects.

Usually eight (8) to ten (10) hour workdays (5) days per week with occasional Saturday and Sunday work, as well as additional early and/or late workdays to accommodate special business circumstances and travel.
