Speech Pathologist

Camp Pendleton, CA

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop coherent treatment strategies.
  • Incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services independently.
  • Conduct patient assessments; provide treatment interventions and consultation to other health care professionals.
  • Use instrumentation (e.g., videofluoroscopy, nasendoscopy, stroboscopy, computer technology) to observe, collect data, and measure parameters of communication and swallowing, or other upper aero-digestive functions in accordance with the principles of evidence-based practice.
  • Provide prevention, screening, consultation, assessment and diagnostic, treatment, intervention,

management, counseling, and follow-up services for disorders of speech and language, including

comprehension and expression in oral, written, graphic, and manual modalities.

  • Use qualitative and quantitative assessment methods, including standardized test and special instrumentation (nasoendoscopy, ridgid endoscopy, air insufflations, and voice prosthetics) to analyze and diagnose the nature and extent of speech, language, and swallowing impairments. 
  • Apply professional knowledge of the principles and theories related to communication and cognitive disorders, professional medical rehabilitation and therapeutic principles, and clinical experiences and training, to develop individualized plans of patient care to improve voice quality, increase oral and/or written language skills for effective communication.
  • Apply professional knowledge of advanced instrumental diagnostic applications and administration of high speech laryngeal photography, fundamental frequency measures, tracheoesophageal air insufflations testing, nasoendoscopy, ridgid video endoscopy, and pharyngeal motility studies (modified barium swallow studies as well as inpatient/beside evaluations).
  • Provide therapy that focuses on regaining lost skills as well as learning ways to compensate for abilities that have been changed because of traumatic brain injury, stroke, or aphasia. Computer assisted programs may be part of the treatment. Identifies individuals at risk for or presenting with cognitive-communication disorders. Selecting and implementing clinically, culturally and linguistically appropriate approaches to assessment and diagnosis using dynamic procedures. Identify factors that contribute to or can be used to ameliorate cognitive communication disorders. Apply standardized and nonstandardized, static and dynamic procedures for assessing language and other cognitive processes. Provide traditional and contextual approaches to cognitive rehabilitation.
  • Maintain accurate records of initial evaluations, progress, assessment and discharge of beneficiaries and communicate with the TBI case manager on the progress of treatment provided and implementation of patient care.
  • Provide insight to the Head of the Audiology, Speech and Vestibular Clinic with the design and development of equipment or techniques for diagnoses and treating communication disorders. 
  • The HCWs case load will include a wide variety of speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders and a large proportion will present with severe and complex impairments resulting from multiple and sometimes unclear etiologies or patients exhibiting organic and non-organic disorders or cognitive impairments associated with mild traumatic brain injury; and post-traumatic stress disorder and mental health conditions that compound evaluation and treatment.
  • Works in conjunction with a team of professionals with in the Otolaryngology Department, Concussion Clinic, Case Managers, Audiology, Neurology, Occupational Therapy, Vestibular Physical Therapy, Neuropsychologist, support services such as dietary, Mental Health, and Social Services. A collaboration paradigm is required with professionals for the assessment and treatment of communication and cognitive disorders.
  • Provide input to medical board determinations for active duty members’ status with regard to posttraumatic stress disorders and/or traumatic brain injury, with cognitive, dysfluency, voice or speech and language disorders.
  • Provide counseling to orient and educate the patient and/or family member about the communication or medical condition; explain treatment goals and plan for the implementation of the treatment plan; elicit cooperation for continuation of therapy to home and work settings; assist the patient and family in understanding and expressing feelings related to deficits. The Speech Pathologist will determine the necessity of consultation to other disciplines and will act as an intermediary between the patient and family; others including work supervisors or other professional staff members when the patient’s language is not intelligible or when behavioral/ cognitive impairment interferes with communication. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree in speech pathology or communication disorders.
  • Graduate from a college or university that includes at least 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology by a regional accreditation organization and a speech pathology academic program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Maintain current certification of Clinical Competency in speech-language pathology (CCCSLP) from ASHA.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Speech Pathologist. 
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a speech pathologist.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
