Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a full-time, one-year position of Visiting Instructor (or Assistant Professor with appropriate credentials) in the Department of Music to begin September 1, 2023. The department anticipates a continued vacancy, and the successful candidate may be considered for continuation into additional years, contingent upon favorable review and the continuing needs of the College.

Department Information: The Music Department at Gustavus Adolphus College offers students of high-aspiration a music education of recognized excellence that enables them to become independent learners, pursue further advanced study, and attain their full potential as musicians. The artists/teachers/scholars of the music faculty offer a balance of tradition and innovation in their teaching and seek to bring students to an awareness of the interrelatedness of the historical, theoretical, pedagogical, and performance areas of music across a broad range of genres. The music department affirms the core value of music in a liberal arts education and a passion for lifelong engagement with music.
Things you will do:
  • Teach 5.75 or 6 course equivalents during the academic year. Primary teaching responsibilities will include conducting the Lucia Singers (auditioned, large soprano/alto choir), the Choir of Christ Chapel (unauditioned, large mixed choir), and leading the Justice Choir (an ensemble that engages in the empathetic, collaborative, and collective power of singing together to create change). Other courses may include Basic Conducting or Secondary Choral Music Methods.
  • Help cultivate a welcoming community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We strive to foster an environment where people can be themselves, build community, learn, and grow.
Things you can choose to do:
  • Improve your teaching by joining a teaching circle, participating in workshops, applying for an internal teaching development grant, and engaging in conversations about teaching with colleagues across campus.
  • Advance your scholarship by working with undergraduate research assistants, joining a writing retreat, applying for an internal grant, receiving travel funds to present at conferences, receiving help applying for external grants, and making use of our research facilities.
  • Develop professional skills by participating in faculty meetings and committees, attending faculty development days, and taking advantage of the College's membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).

Prerequisites
Whats required:
  • Masters degree in choral conducting, music education, or a related field (DMA in Choral Conducting or PhD in Choral Music Education preferred)
  • Ability to recruit and retain undergraduate students for the choral program
Whats preferred:
  • Prior experience as a secondary public school teacher for a minimum of three years
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching
  • Commitment to preparing high-quality pre-service music educators
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities
