Roanoke County Public Schools is Hiring a TEACHER OF VISUALLY IMPAIRED 2024-25 Near Roanoke, VA

Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking applicants for the position of Teacher of Visually Impaired for the 2024-25 school year.
Position Description/Job Summary: The Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) primary responsibility is to provide specialized instruction and services required to meet the unique needs of the students with visual impairments throughout the division.
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Has the primary responsibility for specialized instruction and services required to meet the unique needs of students with visual impairments.
• Conducts Functional Vision and Learning Media Assessments (FVLMA), conducting or participating in assistive technology evaluations, referring students as appropriate for Orientation & Mobility (O & M) evaluations, referring students for low vision exams conducted by low vision practitioners and interpreting evaluation and assessment results regarding the impact of a visual impairment. Collaborating with Department of Blind and Visually Impaired (DBVI).
• Evaluates student progress and provides progress notes. Schedules time for assessments, instruction, planning, preparation of materials, travel, and conferencing with relevant individuals.
• Provides direct instruction in visual efficiency, tactile symbols, braille, assistive technology, auditory skills, social skills, use of near and low vision devices, and other areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), as appropriate.
• Educates, supports, and collaborates with other members of the instructional and vocational teams who work with the student to ensure that appropriate programming is implemented for the student with a visual impairment, including developing appropriate evaluation and assessment strategies.
• Modifies the school environment to accommodate specific visual needs for the students.
• Models appropriate instructional techniques by providing, creating, recommending, and working in collaboration to acquire adapted materials; provides training and consultation to the educational team.
• Participates as a member of the child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to interpret the instructional implications of evaluation results and to help develop an appropriate plan in order to support the student. The TVI may serve as case manager for assigned students ensuring that IEP's are developed, implemented and reviewed according to guidelines.
• Stays up to date with current instructional and educational trends, methodologies and materials for working with students with visual impairments.
• Maintains inventory and monitors all specialized equipment including braille writers, canes, etc.
Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
• A Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement at the appropriate level is required.
• Positive interpersonal and communication skills
• Virginia teacher licensure in Visual Impairment (VI).
