Development Officer (Advancement Team)

Position Reporting Responsibility:
This position reports directly to the Director of Development.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Anyone who is seeking this position at EHA must:

  • Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to urban Christian education including a mature ability to steward cross-cultural relationships
  • Be a strategic thinker, entrepreneurial, and willing to take risks
  • Possess a commitment to advancing the mission of Elijah House Academy through hard work, innovation, and partnership with the fundraising department, and in good stewardship of all resources
  • Practice effective and excellent communication skills in written and verbal form, comfortable with regular interaction with the school constituents including students, parents, teachers, Board members, donors, and community representatives
  • Show integrity with confidential information, organizational skills, strong independent project management, listening skills, and ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism and flexibility
  • Be able to work independently and as a team player
  • Show polite persistence and self-motivation
  • Be financially savvy; capable of discussions about money, VDOE tax credits, wealth, and other assets
  • Possess a good sense of humor; willing to make mistakes
  • Be a quick learner; coachable
  • Be generous and compassionate
  • Have excellent problem-solving ability, judgment and sound decision-making
  • Practice good time management and the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Show good planning and organizational skills with attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 years experience in nonprofit fundraising, business development, finance, sales or comparable role
  • Have a proven access to local networks and ability to build relationships
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and means of personal transportation
  • Be able to work both off and on-site at Elijah House Academy as required to interface with school leadership and to host donor visits and events
  • Professionalism in appearance, handling confidential information, and meeting deadlines
  • Be willing to commit to the position for at least three years

Position Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This individual will be expected to consistently represent the school in a variety of settings with a knowledge and understanding of school activities and growth. The Development Officer will consistently interact with, cultivate, and solicit key stakeholders.

The Development Officer will be expected to maintain a strategic focus on engagement with those individuals within the network. This individual will be expected to spend the majority of his or her time directly or indirectly with these donors. This individual will have limited administrative responsibilities and no supervisory expectations.

As a high-capacity fundraising professional, it will be expected that this individual achieves measurable performance in the development of a donor portfolio, donor engagement, direct solicitation, charitable gifts, tax credit usage, received and renewal rates.

  • Donor Relationships
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of donor relationships
  • Meet goals within the portfolio pertaining to engagements and renewal rates
  • Focus a significant portion of time on communicating and fulfilling EHA’s utilization of Virginia’s educational improvement tax credit program
  • Charitable foundations and churches
  • Manage grant applications, submissions, stewardship, and follow-up reporting
  • Manage and maintain good working relationships with current grantors; this includes submitting all grant reports in a timely fashion
  • Communication
  • Serve as a member of the communication team ensuring donor centric multichannel communication
  • Help create videos, graphics, newsflashes, etc.
  • Events
  • Attend school and development events
  • Attend networking events
  • General Administrative Duties
  • Share donor software management
  • Develop and maintain reports
  • Share advancement team office tasks
  • Research
  • Other
  • Assist a homeroom teacher with morning discipleship
  • Attend weekly advancement meetings and monthly staff meetings
  • Participate in staff training
  • Other duties as needed
