State of South Carolina is Hiring a Wildlife Biologist II Near Richland, SC

This employee will serve as the lead in coordination and surveys for bats in SC Department of Transportation (DOT) structures, and will work with supervisor with limited supervision.
Job Duties Include:
  • Working with SCDOT to better inform project planning and collect statewide bat data for 11 South Carolina bat species known to utilize transportation structures.
    • This includes: conducting surveys at the highest priority SCDOT transportation structures slated for construction, maintenance, or repair.
      • These surveys will occur on bridges and inside culverts and include visual inspection, bat handling, acoustic surveys, and/or guano testing to determine the presence or absence of bat species at each structure. 
  • Designing and implementing a basic research project to better understand bat presence and use of transportation structures in SC and look at the efficacy of existing avoidance and minimization measures being utilized to eliminate bat and SCDOT conflicts. 
  • Providing an annual Bats in Transportation Structures field-based training for DOT personnel to demonstrate:
    • methodology for inspecting bridges and culverts for bats and signs of bat use
    • how to use the SC Bats in Transportation Structures Survey123 form
    • basic facts about bat life history and habitat needs.
  • Submitting data into the DNR Heritage Trust database utilizing standardized bat Survey123 forms in a timely manner and ensuring data quality assurance on control of that bat data.
A master's degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.Employee should be independent and skilled at leading and implementing projects, designing and executing pilot studies, and be familiar with South Carolina's native bats, their biology, habitats, survey methods, and conservation concerns. Ability to train others in bat survey methods and supervise technicians and/or volunteers. Employee should be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with peers and landowners on technical and non-technical subjects, and assist in development and management of grants, budgets, and monthly and annual reports.
